New To Growing - Help
    #26972048 - 10/06/20 12:07 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Hello:

I'm new to this and I would like someone that has grown before to tell me if my growth is going okay or if there might be a problem.  I have included a picture.

I'm looking for feedback.  Thanks in advance.

BW

Another questions.  If the growth is looking good and you eat one of the small ones. Would you feel anything?

Lookin good Bloodwing. Agree with both responses above, you want that perlite exposed as much as possible (not covered with foil) so it can do its job and evaporate water into the terrarium. I like to have mine just a little bigger than the cake itself so it'll catch the vermiculite that falls off instead of it falling into your perlite.

You've got some really fuzzy white mycelium growing up the stem of your fruits, which CAN be a sign of lower than ideal humidity. Make sure to mist a few times a day and trim that foil and you should be in business.

Don't pick the fruits until the veil has broken or is about to break - they'll keep getting bigger until then so it would be a waste to pick now. As far as if you will feel anything, there is a ton of info on this forum about dosing, including an actual dosage calculator. If that's too much info than you want, to dumb it way down you'd need to eat about 2g wet or 0.2g dried to have a noticeable effect. Others may disagree but that's been my experience.

Thank you all for your response.  I have replaced the foil with smaller ones.

I mist twice a day but I was afraid that I was misting to much.  I mist the sides of the grow box and a little on the cakes.  Should I mist more on the cakes and less on the side of the grow box?

I also use 98% H20 and 0.02% H2O2 mixture does that sound about right?

I am open to all advice, this is something I started and I like to learn about.

Also can you re-use the petite more than once and if so who do you wash it to re-use it.

Sorry for all the questions they are just popping into my head as I am writing this and feeling the absence of what I do not know.

Thanks Again

BW

I have never grown pf cakes but. Perlite is not that expensive.  You should probably change it between grows but then again I don't grow pf cakes so I could be wrong. Just my 2 cents. Ps I am pretty sure the hydrogen peroxide is not necessary.  Looking good tho. I would wait another day or so to mature more before picking them

No need to put H2O2 in your mist bottle but i suppose it doesn't hurt. H2O2 is a pretty unstable molecule anyway and quickly denatures to H2O and O2 in the presence of light (that's why the bottles are always brown, and even then if you've had the bottle for a while it's nowhere near 100% H2O2).

You should mist AT LEAST twice a day, ideally 3-5. Mist above the cakes and let the droplets fall gently onto your cakes. As long as you keep your relative humidity around 95%+ and keep the verm moist, you should be good.

Regarding the perlite, just take the cakes out and rehydrate it. Pour or spray (with a kitchen sink sprayer or similar, not a mist bottle) a bunch of water in there, mix it around, flatten it out (do no press down to compact it) and let the water drip out the bottom. I'd also recommend doing a very heavy misting with H2O2 after that, ideally from a bottle you bought in the last month or two. Perlite can harbor contaminants that find their way in there over time. I just rehydrated my perlite and put cakes in there for a third flush and half of them got trichoderma mold all over after about a week. That same perlite had been in my SGFC for a couple months and several flushes, and I kept it on the floor which is obviously not ideal. Just don't have much space in my apartment, and I've been more focused on my monotubs.

Update

Just after a day the things are looking up.  I have included a picture and I will take any comments to make my grow better.  I like to think everyone for the advice given so far.

I do have another question when the mushroom gets red to harvest do I cut them with a pair of scissors or do I pick them off the cake.  I guess what I am asking is how to get the mushroom off the cake without messing up anything.

Thanks Again,

BW

I find when the fruit is mature it will be easy to pull off.

Okay:

I wanted to make sure these shrooms are still good and do not look like anything has sent in on them.  Can you please take a look and let me know if they will be okay?

Yeah, that's just spores. You can pick them earlier next time before they start dropping.

You have more holes than I would like. If your having problems drying out which it looks like you do, you can always cover some holes with refrigeration tape to tweak how much air exchange you’re getting.
The last time I did cakes it was the mid 2000’s and we were making everything way too complicated. I used a solid fish tank with the perlite in the bottom. I rigged a humidifier with piping into the tank and had to play with on/off cycles until I got it all perfect. Light cycles were also a big thing. We also used hygrometers to see real-time what our humidity was. I don’t see anyone doing these things anymore. I guess they’ve found out this isn’t all rocket science like we made it out to be. I liked the gadgetry and building things, so now I’ve come back here and found out all that was unnecessary, I feel a little bummed out in a way.
Anyway, I think you should read all the bod teks and read and read and read them over again. This will help with your confidence when you actually do something. I think your grow looks really good for a first timer.

Thanks you very much.  There is a lot of info out there and trying to find the best is hard sometimes.
