Synthetic filter discs

I found some 90mm synthetic filter discs on Amazon, 12 for $20, that I would have to cut to fit my jars. Seems a little expensive to me but I need some by Sunday. Can I just use 20mm filter discs with extra adhesive or micropore tape over the two holes I'm going to put in the mason jar lids? Much better deal, 64 20mm for $19.

In rogerrabbits notes he says the discs are to be used whole, there made that size for a reason and cutting them up interferes with the airflow (the grooves in the disc).
Are the ones you found for growing mushrooms? I'd leave those whole. But you can cut them up it will still work. Alot of people like to cut them up to get more bang for the buck.

Check the reviews on the discs. I almost bought some and realized by the comments that they were extremely thin.

I've cut the 90mm ones into about 9 circles each. So if you think of it like that, (9 x 12 = 108 discs for $20). I actually still have like 6 or 7 discs leftover, that's how long they've lasted me
And I dunno about what RR said about not cutting them or if it does indeed affect their performance. All I know is I've seen lots of other members on here do it so I did it and it seemed to work fine for me

I get 7 quarter sized circles of SFD out of a single 90mm disk. I’ve never had any problems with them other than the initial pain of cutting out circles, drilling all those holes, scuffing the lid, and silicone them on.

Yeah RR was right about many things, but I've seen 1000s of jars with cut up SFDs on them (and used them many times myself). I have yet to see one person who has had an issue with them so long as their methods are on point.

I use a dime or penny. They only need to be big enough to cover a 1/4" hole.

This is "filter paper" and is not the same as sfd. Cellulose filter discs are also very good and maybe even better than the synthetic ones. Stamets has the best deal on sfd and it seems like outgrow has the best availability of cellulose discs (sorry if this is not proper etiquette any mods please let me know).
Pellon peltex 70 works alright. It's better to use the real deal sfd or cfd.

I hate cellulose discs, synthetic are much preferable to me. Cellulose is easily destroyed by water...

They fall apart for you or degrade? Ive used mine lots of times and they hold up fine. They turn a tan color after a while but they hold up. Just curious... My SFD's last pretty much forever and I haven't run the CFD's nearly as many times so I can't really compare.

That's pretty much why I don't like 'em. The synthetic ones go years before turning dark in color, cellulose ones when I tried 'em turned dark pretty quick and just didn't look good. Admittedly I didn't try them for that long, I ditched them pretty quick and stuck with synthetic after that.

Some Mushroom supply sites on shroomery's sponsor list sell real SFD's manufacured about the size of a dime specifically for this purpose. You need to use adhesive to attach them yourself, but there is enough room on the disc that you should be able to easily put it around the 1/4" hole without overflowing it into the hole, as long as you know how to use glue.
They are manufactured that way, not modified, so the integrity of the disc is not damaged by cutting(whether this is really an issue has not been scientifically tested either direction).
