Agar Work Tools and Tek.
    #26971898 - 10/06/20 10:47 AM (3 years, 3 months ago)

For my Agar dishes I bought some glass petri dishes instead of the plastic ones because I know the platic ones are not as robust and will scratch more easily than the glass ones.  Glass ones will certainly last longer. I also prefer working with the glass dishes!!

I also use those large ketchup type containters that you get when you get take out food. They are sort of clear with lids.  They are not as easy to work with as the glass dishes. The glass dishes are much easier to seal up with a strip of cling film. Whilst the plastic ones just have a lid that clips on. The plastic take out dishes are really cheap though.

My questions:

1 Is it ok to use the plastic take out ketchup type containers?
like these.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/GSL%C2%AE-PLASTIC-STORAGE-CONTAINERS-Weekdays/dp/B005VB50W6/ref=pd_sim_sbs_kh_2

2 Can these plastic containers be washed and re-used again and again until they are no longer useful?

3 Do I need to seal the plastic dishes with a  couple of strips of cling film?

4 Should I sanitise (with iso) or sterilise the dishes before I pour in my hot workable agar from the PC?

Just wondering what the best practice you folks are using here.

Thank you for your help in advance.

Any dish/plate will work if its clean. You'll have to sterilize them in your PC before reusing them. Most people don't like glass dishes because its a bit of working to clean and sterilize the plates especially if you have a significant amount. I just buy the plastic dishes and throw them away after I use them. It's like 30 bucks for 60 plates and that usually gets me by for a few weeks even with a high contam rate.

Wow that sounds pretty wasteful Doc. Just wash and dry mine. Works fine. Lil plastic pastyplates. I have used these 4 times already.

I don't do no-pours. Nothing against them I just haven't tried them. I started pouring right away and haven't tried any no pour methods. I use polystrene petri dishes and the general consensus is that you cant PC them but I haven't tried.
