And best time of year to visit. I'm interested in hiking, fishing, packrafting and other general outdoors actives. Just barley finding out about gems like Glacier and Teton. The Colombia river has sturgeon and the north Cascades has sasquatch. They all seem like really interesting places to visit and I'm sure there are many more out there. Where have you been to and why do you find it interesting?

Australia.
You'd be far more familiar with British place names because they're all over this country.

The Yellowstone/Grand Teton/Jackson Hole region is my favorite region on earth.

Been a handful of times. And as cliche as it sounds, it's just magical. The views are epic. Gorgeous granite peaks on top of you. Pristine lakes and rivers everywhere you look. Waterfalls seemingly around every corner (there are 45 names waterfalls in the region). Sprawling forests. An amazing array of wildlife -- grizzly bears, wolves, moose, eagles. Even the exceedingly rare wolverine inhabit the parks. Just to name a few. A five star ski town (Jackson) that rivals Aspen.
It's just a very, very special place. The only downside is the wealthy elite have taken over and made it their winter playground -- many celebrities and just very wealthy people in general have priced out the average person thus making living in a place like Jackson Hole a distant dream for most.
But pound for pound when it comes to the pure beauty, outdoor activities and wildlife, it's a 10 of 10.

So far it's Yellowstone National Park. That shit is dope and amaaaaaazing views and hikes and animals (bison, wolves, coyotes, black/grizzly bears, marmots, antelope and more). During a hike we encountered a herd of antelope and they hissed at us really loudly. The geysers are breathtaking. Anywhere you look there are vents of steam escaping from the ground. So much thermal activity there it's like a new planet. You will dissolve if you jump into the geysers/hot springs.

Parks in western NC are great, too, such as the Great Smokey Mountain National Park and the area around the Blue Ridge Parkway.

Yeah it's such an epic place. On a truly grand scale.
The hotels inside the park are so cool, too. They're so old and historic. With so many legendary people who have stayed within those rooms too (like Teddy Roosevelt). And the vibe is awesome. Just talking and being around all those people who come from literally all over...and not just from the United States, but from all over the world.
What year did you go?

Never been to the States, so the only parks I've got to go off of are Canadian. Big fan of Strathcona, close-ish to home which is a selling point. Unlike some more tourist-filled canadian parks it doesn't feel crowded or overly curated.

I never went in the hotels in the park, unfortunately. We stayed in a cabin-looking building (it was pretty nice) just outside the park's west entrance. I got nothin' against ole Teddy. That sounds fun! I went in 2017. What year for yeah?

And really just about anywhere along the Australian alps. Doing the entire 650km walking track with a group of likeminded hikers has been on my bucket list for a couple of years now. One day it will happen.

I'm partial to the entire Sierra Nevada range. Mineral King National Park is pretty epic and very wild. Kings Canyon has sequoias. And on the eastern slopes you have a geothermal paradise almost entirely on BLM territory. Every season has its positive and negative aspects. I'm partial to late fall because it's much less crowded. You need to get that sweet spot between summer tourists and winter sports.
Also Channel Islands National Park off the southern California coast is worth mentioning. Santa Cruz Island in particular.

Yellowstone is good for the back country fishing otherwise its more of a tourist trap than Disney world. I'm not gonna be miserable in some shithole waiting in line surrounded by Floridians. Disgusting I just can't do it.Grand canyon or Bryce. Bryce would be my favorite if it wasn't for just how fucking ridiculous it is the first time you see the grand canyon. But once u see it a bunch times ur like ok thats the grand canyon who gives a shit.

The place I'm looking at now is a town called whitefish in Montana. A train ticket from Seattle is 68$. The town nearby is called Kalispell. It right outside glacier national Park and Yellowstone in 300 miles south. I could rent a car in Kalispell. Seems like an adventure.

The parks in utah are some of the most amazing, otherworldly places I've ever seen. Spent 12 days camping and hiking in Bryce Canyon, Arches, Zion and Capital Reef. Being out there in the desert among all the crazy rock formations was like walking around an alien planet.
My favorite is the Adirondack mountains in upstate NY. 6.1 million acres (larger than Yellowstone, Yosemite, Grand Canyon, Great Smoky, and Everglades National Parks combined), 46 mountain peaks over 4,000ft, over 10,000 lakes, 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, 200,000 acres of old-growth forests. It contains some of the most wild wilderness left on the east coast.

By the way I just looked up most visited parks in the US and the Grand Canyon is ahead of Yellowstone and receives roughly 2 million more tourists annually than Yellowstone

So this guy says he's been there "a bunch of times" to a park that gets significantly more traffic than even Yellowstone. Chief you're an idiot and you ruined the Grand Canyon. I hope you can sleep at night knowing that you ruined that canyon forever and now we can't see the stars there anymore

When i lived in Montana as a kid, i had the Honor of visiting Glacier National Park. It was one of the most incredible experiences i ever had. I hardly remember all the details it but i do remember it was breath-takingly beautiful

I have booked a couple days to Schiermonnikoog in a few weeks
Its a small island and apparently has a very quiet national park, especially in the off-season.
Planning a 20km hike on acid

Unfortunately here in the Netherlands we dont have the epic natural surroundings you guys in the States have

Well I gotta work with whats available here
I live in one of the most developed nations in the world. As least there are no cars on the island and at night there is very little light pollution. So epic starfields
I expect it will be raining and overcast my entire stay

Speaking of star gazing, one of my short term goals was to see the milky best with my bare eyes. I recently went to the gates of Big Bend National Park (closed because of covid) near the time of a new moon and thou the stars were impressive, I could not make out the band of the milky way. Has anyone here been to any of these dark sky parks and can actually see the band of the milky way with thier own eyes or is that something that only the camera can see?

Oh I've seen it clear as day alright; it's fucking spectacular to see with the naked eye like that.
I was 14,000ft above sea level in the Northern Tablelands of NSW, Australia, and many miles away from any semblance of civilization though.

I think you mean big bend ranch state park and the Colorado River kinda towards Houston which are a bit aways from each other, but both very nice. I remember the Colorado River being overgrown with bush and kinda wild looking. If your ever around the area of Big Bend again, check out the devils river state natural area near Del Rio. I always felt like that part of Texas around Del Rio and Big Bend was a very unique part of Texas and interesting place to explore. There were lots of animals, especially at night

Yosemite. I have a painting with a list of all the National Parks and I have been to more than half of them. Upper and Lower Yosemite are so amazing! Also the Hetch Hetchy part. Everywhere you look is more beautiful than the last place you looked. As for the time of year, anytime of year is awesome.
I'm actually going out to Yosemite before X-mas this year with some friends and if any of you guys want to join us then let me know and I can make it happen with extra hotel rooms and.or camping equipment. We'll probably stay at a local resort and chill in the hot tub and pool with drinks at night. During the day we're going to bike the lower canyon and do some hiking and maybe even dose out on some L or whatever feels right.
A sort of close second is Redwood State and National Park.
Yellowstone is on the top of my list to see, along with Zion, Crater Lake, and Lassen. I plan to go to all 3 of those net year.

I actually did do some research on the subjects and found out that to kayak the grand canyon is something like 200 miles and that you need a permit to do it. In Yellowstone, it's a federal offense to float the river. I was also just reading an article urging hikers to be prepared and know thier limits when hiking the grand canyon because there have been numerous search and rescues and calls to the ranger from hikers in distress.

I'm happy they have such stringent protections in Yellowstone - it's one of the few places in the continental US where there's that much flourishing wildlife. One of the few places aside from Alaska and Northern Idaho/Montana where you really need serious contingency plans for dealing with bears

For real. I had my can of bear mace ready when I was in Yellowstone. I wanted to make sure the bear spray worked so crouched down and did a super quick spray into the ground. Well, I guess there was enough wind that a little bit of the spray got picked up and went in my brother's face LOL, he was a little agitated for a few minutes, but luckily I didn't get much at all on him.
Right after that happened we started hiking in some deep woods and we were approaching a fork in the trail. Right as we were about to reach the fork a huge bison comes sprinting down one of the paths and continues through the fork and onto the other path we weren't on, thank God. The bison was so quiet while it was sprinting, I would have had no chance to spray it with bear spray if it had wanted to charge me.

My favorite park ever was Zion national park in Utah. Breathtaking and unlike anything I could've dreamed up.

You're also not supposed to swim in the Hetch Hetchy part of Yosemite. For those who aren't familiar with this area it is part of Yosemite that is remote from Yosemite Valley. It looks almost exactly like Yosemite Valley except they dammed it and flooded it with water so that the great people of San Francisco had drinking water.
I think it was Ansel or Muir who said it was the most beautiful part of the Sierra's that they have ever seen. Personally I think Paradise Valley is the prettiest part of the Sierra's that I have been to so far and Fern Lake is a close 2nd.
I backpack the Hetch Hetchy and go like 12 miles in by myself. Then I find a nice spot with a waterfall and frolic nude in the water. After that I pee in the water and laugh that someone in the city is going to drink my urine. It's a great time for sure!!!
Before the Flooding

Present Day

There is a movement to unflood the valley and return it to it's natural state. I'm all for it. They could dig a deep lake in the central valley and route the water into that to provide drinking water and that should work just fine. On the other hand it is really pretty the way it is now too.
This is where I will be camping this weekend I think.

National and state parks are flooded with people right now. It's a terrible time to visit any of them as a result if you ask me.

Big Bend National Park and Big Bend Ranch State Park are good options for those of us who hate crowds of fanny pack wearing tourists. You can't get more in the middle of nowhere in the lower 48, best star gazing in the lower 48 and its Cactus country

It's not the sexy answer but yellowstone by a single order of magnitude beats every other national and state park I've ever been to

fyi for people complaining about crowds... hit up Northern Cascades - I forget it's even a national park but some of the best hikes I've ever taken are in that range.. You ain't going to see anyone most places. And you're already around the time of year where the savage weather system there will almost kill you randomly every other day!

Lophosaurus said: You're also not supposed to swim in the Hetch Hetchy part of Yosemite.

Tripsurfer...
It isn't that hard to navigate. There is a pretty decent trail most of the way. In the picture above can see a tree line on the left side and that is basically where the trail goes. There is a nice cave/tunnel at the beginning and then a few nice waterfalls along the way.
When on trail if you look left then there is a steep rock cliff, if you go right then there is a big drop off into a rocky reservoir. Last time I was hiking to my waterfall camping spot I seen some super fresh bear poopy on the trail and it freaked me out because if a bear was walking the trail towards me then we would have to turn around or pass each other on the trail and there is also a good chance the bear might feel trapped and that is no good, even if they are just black bears.

Do you guys do any backpacking at these places? I want to make a thread for backpacking and backpacking gear, but my gear isn't that nice yet so I will wait until someone else starts it.

If all plays out right, I'm gonna end up in Alaska this summer and I was hoping to visit Wrangell or Kobuk valley. It's way the fuck out there. You ither need to hike or airtaxi in, but once you get to the river, it's clean packrafting for a couple hundred miles and you can ultimately make it to the city of Kotzebue and take a commercial plane back to Fairbanks. If your in the Anchorage area, you can ride a bus to Denali or talkeetna and kayak the susitna down to the bay. I was reading an article where this couple had kayaked for 3 months along the passages near Juneau and were foraging , catching fishyl and crab. All they brought was a spice kit and I'm assuming a tent and a camera. They just camped out and lived off the ocean all summer. It be fun to do some shit like that. Plenty of fish that time of year

That sounds like a fun time! I would like to backpack some parts of Alaska too. I really want to try to move up there for a year or two eventually and try my hand at living off the land. Trying to cut wood, hunt and fish, farm, and try to stock up for winter. Seems like a fun thing to try and would make for some good stories too.

I was reading that glacier national park and waterton lakes national park in Canada have joined to become an international peace park and that one can continuously hike across the border into the other country legally via Backcountry trails. Had anyone here ever done such a thing and how plausible would that be at a time like right now? Would one be able to Uber to the he closest city in Canada to resupply before heading back?

Yes I enjoyed Big Bend. Been there twice. Want to go back. I'm in Texas so one might think I can't be that far from it, yet I'm still a 9-ish hour drive away

Naturally, you make it to townsite in Canada inside the park and you wish to stay a night at a lodge. An American passport may raise an alarm that there's an American there who might shouldn't be, yeah? So prehaps what might help is a fake Canadian license. Not for the purpose of underage drinking, but more for the purpose of traveling inside the state and renting lodging without raising an alarm to an American being there who shouldn't be. Idea sounds crazy and I'm not familiar with IDs and would worry some trying to pass it off, but it could work. Might be able to pull off a secret few weeks vacation in the neighbor up north. What you think?

I would probably cross the border with light camping gear in case I needed to rest - but mostly I would just use my phone to get lyfts/ubers and other sort of non-ID transport until I got to a friends house either in Alberta or southern BC and do it that way Also you may be able to do some air bnb/couch surfing type things without ID

I would be even better if I didn't need a fake ID. I'm most concerned about going into town to resupply befe heading back and possible ID checks at the lodge or upon reentry to the park.

Just returned from a short trip to one of our nations islands with a massive nature reserve (Schiermonnikoog)
Dropped LSD (100mics) and did a walkabout for about 5-6 hours
Epic dunes and remote beaches with noone around for miles. It was super windy and clouds mixes with sunshine and rain. Best rainbows I have ever seen.

Another thread here inspired me to drop early in the morning. Walking the village and interacting with people whilst spacing out at 10 in the morning was interesting
The island has only a few cars and I forgot what real silence was
Def need to get out more
