Are OLED TVs overrated? 1

I just bought the new 2020 LG OLED CX. Been wanting an OLED bad for a while after being mesmerized looking at one on showcase at the store. Of course those are optimized to blow you away. OLEDs, by most accounts, are considered among the most elite of televisions when it comes to top shelf picture quality.
The 55 inch model I bought ran me around $1,700.
Yeah the picture quality with solid 4K content is good, and it better be at that price tag, but honestly I can't tell much of a difference between it and my other 4K television -- which is a low end Vizio 4K LED (that cost me a little less than $500). Now yes the deep blacks they always talk about when it comes to OLEDs is legit -- the blacks are as dark & deep as looking into a black hole in space, and there is a quite staggering difference between that aspect and non OLEDs, but did I really pay an extra $1200 for deep blacks? Okay I know as far as specs go there is a lot more to it than just that, but idk. I think most TV experts would just say that my amateur eyes aren't advanced enough to see the differences. And they may be right.
But I've had it for about a week now and I'm just not all that impressed considering the steep price tag and haven't been blown away like I was at the store.

maybe.....
maybe, i'll hold onto my cheap vizio a while. I thought in addition to blacker blacks, all colors were supposed to be a bit more rich on those OLED tvs.
I figure you're watching high bitrate 4k video. There is definitely not as much quality content as there should be. for as long as 4k has been around.

I feel like a made a mistake. But I'm just gonna eat it. I already got it mounted and everything. I do come across 4K content from time to time where it does look very sharp, clean and impressive. But at the premium cost that I paid for it, I would expect it to blow away my significantly cheaper Vizio, and it really doesn't. Not that I can see anyway. I have heard from people who have suggested that a high end unit like this needs to be professionally calibrated...which means another couple hundred or whatever
My brother-in-law was also saying how I need to get a 4K blu-ray player because those would produce the best images I could get to truly get the most out of this TV because the 4K images would be uncompressed.
I also am also finding out that not all streaming 4K content are born equal -- as there are certain 4K shows & movies on Amazon for instance that don't look nearly as clean and high quality as others. Some are very eye popping and impressive where as others are "4K" but still a couple levels below.
One thing that does make me feel a little better though is I've read a lot of reviews on this particular television and this unit is "future ready", and is high powered to handle so much of the high quality content of the future...whenever that future arrives anyway. Like for instance many are saying that the new next gen gaming consoles will pair beautifully with this TV and will be able to really shine to their maximum capacities. We'll see.
I'm currently watching an Amazon Prime show (Zero Zero Zero) on it and the 4K is really showing out right now and looking like it did on the showcase floor.
Hopefully in time I'll come to appreciate it as I find more content like this that allows it to shine.

A lot of, if not all of the streaming 4k content is a rather low bitrate especially when compared to the blurays like you said. I bet a ps5 or series x hooked up to that thing would be amazing.... some flight simulator 2020
There are also other issues that come up with the cheaper 4k tvs. I initially had issues with uneven backlight or banding issues. I don't think those issues are as common with OLED tvs.

Yes. LCD is comparable in terms of color and white intensity. OLED wears out more quickly, developing burn-in, at least in the use case of cell phones. With a TV, if you are on the menu a lot, or use one channel all the time, you might get that eventually. Still, the black is a major advantage. LCD can only achieve a dark gray with the brightness up.

The first time I saw an OLED screen on display, I was in a bit of awe. I would pass by the displays at the entrance of the Costco I frequent for a couple of years, always taking a minute to soak it up... and yearning to pick one up. But at that time, they were $6,000+ and I just couldn't stomach the cost. My theater at the time used a 100" 1080p projector, that - while problematic with daytime light - did a well enough job for the relatively small amounts of evening TV that my wife and I watched.
When one of the earlier major price drops finally came around, I bit the bullet and picked up a 65" LG B6 OLED through Costco for $2,500 after tax. No regrets whatsoever. I since bought a 55" Samsung 4K on sale @ Costco for $350 for our vacation home, and while it gets the job done, I make efforts to wait to watch the most cinematic/high quality productions until we are home, because the color and contrast quality simply cannot compare. Is the price difference worth it for the OLED? For me and for my primary viewing device, absolutely; but this determination must rely on your own personal values with regard to the interrelationship between your desire for visual fidelity and whatever that amount of money means to your bottom line. We set my in laws up with a Samsung's QLED (generally considered a competitor technology to OLED) that was about half the cost of our LG, and it does offer an impressive experience at a lower price point, even as I'm still satisfied that we went with the LG.
Fidelity has always been important to me. I like to create, draw, paint, play music, work with clay... I even ran a business in the audio industry manufacturing low distortion high excursion subwoofer drivers for a while, and I appreciate the fine detail that the OLED screen provides. It definitely lays bare some of the limitations of streaming content and the compression algorithms that the various services uses, but I'm ok with that. For the same reason I have custom built line source speakers that stand taller than I am, I never get tired of our OLED screen, and would hands down recommend the technology to anyone serious about wanting the best quality picture for their theater.
If you're feelin' a bit let down by your purchase, load up your YouTube app and pull some 4K/8K content off there. It may not be the type of stuff you like watching, but they have some amazing nature/travel content that should help deliver that jaw-dropping wow factor. The following one always blows me away:

Thanks, I will definitely watch that on the OLED
And I've come to find that all 4K content are not at all equal, as I've found a significant amount of "4K" content that are mediocre at best, but some that are absolutely incredible on this television.
I'm slowly appreciating it more the more I come across content that maximizes this TV's capability.
And I'm very, very much looking forward to seeing how one of the next gen gaming consoles look on this TV, as well as running 4K blu-ray discs on it.
