Thin, wispy mycelium(?) on popcorn
    #26970832 - 10/05/20 03:49 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Hi all,

I knocked up some jars of popcorn a little over a week ago and I am seeing what I hope is some early mycelium growth. However, it's very thin and wispy at this point and where I am starting to see thicker white coverage, it's only where the kernels are cracked. Just want to know if this is normal early growth or something I should be concerned about (I'm a major noob still). Also, there's some fresh darkening on some of the kernels (easiest to see in pic 1) - is this just the mycelium consuming some of the kernels or something I should also keep an eye on?

Finally, since this is my first-ever post I just wanted to say thank you to everyone on this forum. I've learned SO much from just looking through posts and comments. Appreciate you all.

Idk for sure but doesn’t look great. When growth starts only on top like that a lot of times it’s filter failure.

Corn almost always looks off to me but if you squirted spores just in the middle it might be ok. Usually with syringes you’ll see growth all down the sides.

Thanks for the reply. I feel the same way about corn, I'm using rye now and it just feels more stable, even with the extra prep time due to the soak.

I should've noted that I am sering similar growth down the sides, it just didn't show the wispiness as well on camera so I focused on the top.

I'll be waiting it out either way and will post an update when things are more conclusive.

Looks like the start of cobweb to me. Look at it again in a day or two and if it's exploded in growth, definitely cobweb. I've noticed that cobweb on corn starts slow then explodes.

good healthy mycelium is unmistakable. if you end up opening these jars do it outside so you dont contaminate the grow room and make it extremely hard to de contaminate

Based on the comments it doesn't sound good. I'll keep them going for another few days at least, just to see what this stuff does, and report back to close the loop.

This is happening to literally every one of my jars from this run. I used sterile technique (as best as I could) and self-healing inoculation ports. If this is mold, it's growing specifically where I squirted the spore solution. Is the solution itself the most likely contam vector?

Yes and that will always be the case when putting spores directly onto grain.

Don't worry about opening them inside or wherever. Just dump it in the trash and wash the jar. I grow tubs of mold on purpose (aspergillus oryzae and rhizopus oligosporum amongst other things) and keep them right next everything else with no problem. Maybe just don't dump it out and spawn a new tub without washing your hands lol.

Thanks guys, really appreciate the input. This is my second-ever run so I have next to no experience in spotting contams etc.

As for the update, it was DEFINITELY mold as you all said:

Will be trying a new syringe on a new grain (not that I'm blaming the popcorn) and hopefully I'll have some better results.

I would try some no pour pasty plates with a bit of spore solution on a sterile swab first. No use in wasting more time and popcorn. Also eat the popcorn and use WBS or Rye berries:cheers:

I'm trying to get some agar plates going but in the meantime I can't stop knocking up grain jars with spores. I didn't use Pasty's tek but did do a no-pour tek that seems to be working well so far.

And I'm very excited for the day when I can stop using spores altogether.

I hope you go better with a different grain. I’m a noob too and reading through threads like this really helps. Have a great grow
