Collybia Maculata cultivation?
    #26970380 - 10/05/20 10:32 AM (3 years, 4 months ago)

So about 6 months ago I heard about a mushroom called collybia maculata which contains a chemical called Collybolide, a k-opioid receptor antagonist. What I find the coolest about this is that the only other plant known to interact with only this receptor is Salvia, using the chemical Salvinorin-A.

Fast forward to yesterday, I found, identified, and saved a spore print of the mushroom and have 2 drying right now. Does anyone know how to go about cultivating this mushroom? Most forums only talk about cube cultivation so I was hoping for a little more info.

Here's the link if anyone's interested:

Hi Kuzjoe,
What an interesting find, and thank you for the link! From my understanding, C. maculata is saprophytic on conifer debris.

You probably already know this, but (just in case you don't) the standard approach of isolating a pure (or multispore) culture from your print (on agar), transferring that to sterilized rye grain, and then inoculating softwood chips as a bulk substrate for fruiting would be a good place to start. I would try something like Scott's Mulch which is chipped Douglas Fir. I find that Doug Fir seems to support an array of "wood lovers". I am no cultivation expert, but those are my two cents.

Appreciate the response! I'll look into it, I am still new to agar so I'm nervous for my first time working with it.

Hi Kuzjoe, working with agar it's pretty straightforward...but I can totally appreciate your apprehension. I find that it is very important to make sure your mix is homogenous before you autoclave, make sure you follow the recipe, and don't leave it in the autoclave/pressure cooker too long. Small amounts of agar don't need to be sterilized for long. If you have access to a lab (or someone's home lab) it would probably be much easier.
