Bury your friends * 1
    #26609907 - 04/18/20 09:06 AM (3 years, 9 months ago)

Our first grow is done, although it didn't go well because our apartment is too cold. But we've learned things for next time, including, most importantly, to use a larger terrarium and to heat the terrarium with a pad, and to plug the pad into an Inktomi temp gauge that cuts power above 78 degrees.

So we said farewell to these cakes by burying them. I believe we're in the wrong climate for PEs to grow in the wild, but we're giving them a shot. I don't know what most people do with their cakes or grow media, but it seems that burying it, whenever and wherever possible, honors the fungus and gives it a chance, however remove, of popping up elsewhere.

Well PE are more sensitive than other cubes, but you never know... I put one drop from a spore syringe under tomato plants outside for fun.  Didn’t think anything would happen and totally forgot I did that.  A few months later I randomly noticed there were mushrooms growing there.  So doesn’t hurt...

Since last time, we've moved from PF Tek cakes to much more substantial tubs. But we're still burying our grows, cause you never know where life will find a way.

I just cover my old subs in grass clippings or leaves and water with the garden hose if they look like they still have potential or have the time.

I was burying my spent tubs outside but noticed a rather large amount of red ants coming to visit and probably taking off with the coir. Maybe some termites too but thankfully I didn't see any during the inspection.
