Please help... feel so defeated. Been over a month now :(
    #26968909 - 10/04/20 11:00 AM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys. The spore people suggested I tried this site. I apologize I am a first time grower. I did the research. Thought I knew what to do. I bought a sterile rye spawn bag from midwest grow kits. Injected. Kept in 70 degrees give or take. Everything I read said after 2 weeks mix it with casing mix. Kept everything sterile with iso alcohol. Used gloves. The issue I think lies in the fact that it wasnt fully colonized. It was BARELY white on the inside. I didnt realize it needed to be entirely colonized and white before you did that. So anyway I put it in a plastic shoe box size container with no lid, inside of a big blue tub so no light could get in. I left it like that and in a week there was white all over. I couldnt see any pins but white stalks started climbing up and on the sides. Then I started to research more and realized I could put an aquarium heater in the big blue container in a big jar of water to keep the temperature around 72. That seemed to help a lot at first. I started seeing these little droplets that weren't water. Someone said they were a good sign? So I waited.. waited.. waited. Then realized I needed some light. I bought a cheap LED light that was throwing off a lot of heat so I took apart a cheap nightlight with 5 LEDs in it and put it above them on a timer. That's when things seemed to stop. I thought maybe it was too much moisture so I covered the jar and took out the cup of water I had sitting in there to keep moisture in the air. But now I'm thinking open water even in a separate container is bad. Oh and I drilled holes in the lid. About 5 on 2 of the corners and taped one of those cents from the spawn bag to cover each set of holes so c02 could escape. And NOW here we are 2 months from me starting the rye bag and the white is slowly starting to disappear. I keep misting with distilled water and making sure it isn't too moist. I thought it maybe needed more heat or air so I bought a heat fan and took the lid off and put it near it, not on it. At this point I ordered more spores and I'm ready to call it quits on this one. Such a disappointment as I've always wanted to micro dose. My mind is constantly racing and i thought this might really help me. But looks like it's going to be another 2 months 🤦‍♂️. If anyone knows how to save it or if I even can save it please let me know. There are also bluish green things appearing which some say is a bad sign and some say it's good. Now today it looks like a big blue thing is trying to pop up from under the white. I'm so confused. Next time I'll let it fully effing colonize. I just dont get how some people say they take 3 weeks to grow. And others claim months. How is there that much of a diversified opinion?

Yeesh.

You didn’t do enough research.

Honestly I stopped reading 3/4 the way down because it was just continuous bad decisions ;(

Sorry, but at least you got some failure out of the way.  Now you’re here, and you can learn to do it right.

As for your grow, you failed from the very beginning.  Your bag needs to be fully colonized before you spawn it.  (Mix with substrate)

Edit - as for the variance in length of times, that is somewhat normal, but there is also a chance you’re getting different time periods confused.

I have jars/bags that can colonize completely in 2 weeks, but not always.

Then once I spawn that, it’s usually 2 weeks for it to colonize the sub and start pinning.

This place is definitely where you want to be; if you research here you will ultimately succeed.  Use the search function, use the links people suggest in their signatures, read the TEKs, etc.

The problem with myco for the sole purpose of wanting mushrooms asap is that it’s difficult to have patience, which is needed.  Go buy a bag to get your micro dose on, while working on your own grow for the next couple months.

Thanks for not chewing me out.. I appreciate it. Yeah I figured. So I should just chuck this? Its dead?. I wish I knew these were so touchy. I thought it would be easier to grow these than pot lol. But oh okay that's interesting. My girlfriends ex had experience with this but they didnt date long enough for her to see the final result. She even told me to leave it in the spawn bag but I thought if I didnt take it out I'd screw it up. Yikes. Oh well. I appreciate your help. Is she right in saying I can buy like unsalted or buttered popcorn corn and use that instead of buying spawn bags and just boil it for 15 minutes or so? I guess I'll just google that before bugging you anymore about it lol.

:elderno: This ain't the place for that.

Just do more research and be more patient. Rushing and over-manipulating things will just lead to more failure.

PF cakes are great if you don't have a pressure cooker yet.

Yea start here 👆

Don’t google.

She’s right in that you can use popcorn, but there are far better options for beginners.

Also recommend PF tek.  You’ll learn what you need doing it that way, as opposed to buying kit items online.

Do more research. Failure is a natural part of the learning experience. This hobby will teach you how to be patient and how to learn from your mistakes.  There is a wealth of information on this website. Learn how to make jars. Stay away from grain bags that you order online. Stay away from heaters. Look into RR lets grow mushrooms. Look into Bod's easy AF teks. The PF tek is a great starting point for beginners because it teaches you a lot about the hobby and has less room for error, although it produces less fruits. Grain jars are good for when you have read about how to g2g and make agar. Agar is amazing and you should learn it as soon as possible. Read, read, read some more and don't stop reading more. Don't get discouraged, trust the process. Once you finally reach your goal, it will all be worth it. I'm here if you have any questions that you cant answer from a quick google search. Good luck!!

They definitely are not easier than pot. Not even by a really, really wide margin. tbh THAT was the first mistake. Pot grows itself, they call it weed for a reason lol.

Your biggest issue is patience. I understand this all too well.

As others have said, if you have spores on the way, buy what you need to do the PF tek.

You could then learn to make a spore syringe and do another pf tek with the syringe you already have once you get some mushrooms to take spores from, or buy more spore syringes down the road.

Whether you want to advance further than that in this hobby is up to you, but you will need a pressure cooker and to learn about agar. Agar moves much more quickly and can help with the impatience aspect.

Also, please separate your sentences a little bit. Although mine are too separated so don't copy my format.

It took me over a year of trying to get fruits.

Just consider that it may be easier for someone to synthesize DMT.

But its not like I have success with everything each time. Ive still never had a successful second flush, I haven't been able to duplicate the number of fruits from my first grow yet, and i was only able to get 6 or seven ape fruits from my last grow. Some people might have success faster or slower than me but I have just kept going. So keep going and don't be a person that gives up on something after only a month. Nothing in this hobby seems like it takes less than a month anyway so even if you got lucky you still wouldn't know if you were successful or not.

Things that didn't work for me are,

-spore syringes to grain
-all in one grain bags
-grain bags
-pF cakes
-rye berries
-grain to grain transfers
-Still air boxes
-an APE swab

Some people have had lots of success with some of these things but when things didn't work i stuck with it or I just moved on and found stuff that worked for me. If I kept trying I probably could have found a way to make anythhing work.

Things that worked for me-

-Grain jars
-pressure cooker
-Popcorn grain
-Home mycology channel on youtube
-malt extract agar
-pet food agar with furantoin (antibiotic)
-Agar transfers
-Homemade laminar flow hood build
-APEReverted spore print
-APE swab
-patience (but admittedly this is difficult) I don't know whats harder waiting for fruits or waiting for the new xbox series x to come out in November.

With each success in this hobby you can build on that and things become easier and faster. For example, once I could do agar transfers I never had to start over with again with spores. Now I have a perpetual cycle of mycelium that gets rotated from transfers to grain inoculations.

Admittedly, this hasn't been cheap for me. People say this is a cheap hobby and while it hasn't broken the bank i've spent some money to make things easier on myself. If you are cheap or broke things might be harder.

Anyway- learn some resilience and get back to it or find something else that you want to stick to.

Good luck

Great advice for this hobby and life in general ^^. Home mycology on YouTube is the man! PCs are amazing but a good PC is an investment. It will totally make things better once you decide to drop some cash on one. I'm curious about the pet food antibiotic thing, care to share a tek on it?
