Agar plate ready for division yet?

I have agar plates (pre-poured Calf brain agar, all I could get at the time) with excised P. cubensis stipe pieces which appear to be colonising nicely - I've only had contam on 1 out of 20. Looking at the plates, the (faint) mycelium has almost grown to the edge. There's a much smaller inner ring about 1-2cm in diameter around the original stipe fragment that looks much thicker. (see attached pic). Question: Can I use the areas of "Faint" mycelium on these plates is-as to produce more plates (or inoculate grain), or should I wait for the thicker "ring" to grow out to the edge of the plate?

It looks like you are growing mold. As you probably know, the agar you are using is made for growing bacteria, not mushrooms. Most of the nutrients are proteins which aren't really good for most mushrooms (maybe cordyceps, idk). But def not good for psilocybes. There is a .02% dextrose content, but that's not enough.
Make your own agar, its only two relatively easy to find ingredients plus water. Pasty plates are really easy for newbies and can be made with things easily found locally.
Pouring your own petris is just a little bit more difficult, but totally worth it. But you'll probably have to get stuff online. Here is a good write up for pouring your own petris.

So an update on this. I put material (Agar slices) from 3 of the calf brain agar plates onto pre-poured PDA dishes. Within a couple of days vigorous growth was seen on all plates once the myc got into the PDA, and 2.5 weeks later they are pretty much fully colonised. There was mold on 1 plate, and some bacterial contamination on a few others that will all have occurred during the transfer. So in conclusion, calf brain agar grows very thin looking mycelium, but it can be done and used for further growth on PDA. Not that I'd recommend it, having seen the results of PDA, but if that was all you had, it can be done. For people like me with very limited time to put into this, pre-poured PDA is fantastic. Highly recommended.
