How to improve my technique with a Gravity water Bong? 1

It seems my technique be hit or miss, but mostly miss. How do I practice, and what should be the end result? One big black ash pellet falling easily outta the dish? I use clear plastic bottle; shhould I see smoke rapidly gushing from the bowl into the chamber every time if I'm doing it right? It doesn't always do that for me. How hard do I pull up the bong? Questions like that.

Pulling up really slowly is what makes it work for me, and at the end of burn I slowly unscrew the cork from bottle (while still slowly pulling it up) to get unimpeded access to suck the smoke out. It takes a bit of practice to get things going. Most important is not to let the moving part slip down, that will push out the smoke in the room and also makes all the ash etc. fly out everywhere too.

Exactly. With the gravity bong, its all about that precise control of moving the bong upward from the water. U dont wanna go too fast or too slow. Its a tricky maneuverer that takes practice. Feel free to practice without bud to get the speed and motion down.

You mean to pull up not too fast or too slow, and burn the ash into a big black lump, etc.?
Okay. Any visual cues to look for?

By the way, how high do you fill the water in relation to top of the bottle? close, or does it matter if you get the correct technique down? I think the second scenario, But I'm trying to make sure.
Any rate, here is my practice plan--I'll make a packed lower bed of parsley from around five pinches, followed by a smaller, looser layer above it. After that, I'll light it up, and practice the right pull-up speed thrice, and then assess how to make the most smoke from my technique, judging from how black the ash is, and from the the visual inensity of the smoke exuding from the bong's mouthe when pulling up. How be that?

Hm--I had fairly decent hit, not a great one--but I think I noticed something--the dish was cherry-red--it isn't always a cherry in the dish--it always should have a cherry, shouldn't it? Well, if so, I got that right, but it was still quite burning by the time had pulled most of the the bong from the water--that was a mistake, is it not?
WHat is the solution? Just pull slow? THat said, by jerking fast, I lit the cherry--I think I want from lifting too slow to too fast, and in previous attempts, I didn't light a cherry at all--I just singed the top layer of the parsley, and there was no smoke in the bong to speak of.
Am I on the right track, still?

Yes it should be cherry red (burning) during the entire pulling-up motion.
Sounds like you are getting it down, it just takes practice.
I would leave some room at the top so u dont get water into your bowl by accident. I would say around 10% air at the top of the neck.

Easiest gravity bong I ever made was a water jug with a hole in the bottom, and the cap modified to fit a socket wrench fitting. This was for cannabis but I imagine you could do the same thing with a metal screen and deemsters.
It gave massively powerful hits. Light substance after filling jug with water and uncover the hole in the bottom. No lifting required

Yeah thats called a Waterfall Bong if I recall. Much easier but doesnt have the convenience of pushing the hit into your lungs like the Gravity Bong.

Hm--when it gets all the way down, and there is nothing more to pullup, what should I do? Wait till the cherry burns out? Wait till I stop hearing sizzle?

You'll want to have just little enough greens in the cup part so that it can finish the burn as you reach the maximum capacity of the device, otherwise you're just letting the smoke go to waste as it won't be sucked in the bottle anymore and if you happen to pull the moving part out the water you'll lose a lot of the already caught smoke.
It helps to have largest possible bottles for that. I have a 1.5 liter one moving in a 2 liter one, using as much water as possible, a friend managed to make his setup using a 5 liter water jug thing instead.

"Cup" is just another name for the bowl with the smoking ingredients, yes? Also, what does this terminology of "smoke/draw the cherry down" stand for? If ound it here: https://www.dmt-nexus.me/forum/default.aspx?g=posts&t=82660 Is it another term for "pulling?"

Correct. Pulling the bottle upward pulls air down from the atmosphere into the bowl with the ignited weed and down into stem of the gravity bong.
Perhaps this video will help you with the technique:

Hm. I thought with a gravity bong that you didn't cut the bottom from the bottle; here, it instead seems that you do.

I know, the terminology is confusing. Theres two main types of Gravity Bong, the traditional Classic Gravity Bong and the Waterfall Bong. The Waterfall Bong uses gravity to pull the water out a hole on the bottom of your jug causing a vacuum. But with Gravity Bongs, the "traditional" type of Gravity Bong, you are pulling the bottle with the cut-bottom against gravity then slowly push the bottle down with gravity.
How a Classic Gravity Bong Works:

How a Waterfall Gravity Bong Works:

THank you, Logical; that genuinely elucidates--I have been using the older, more open design. Why is the gravity waterfall with a hole on the side, not in the center of the bottle?

Ah gotcha.
Not sure what you mean by "center of the bottle". Are you referring to the center of the bottom of the bottle?
The reason its on the side is because its most convenience to plug and unplug with a hole on the side. But u can put the hole anywhere near the bottom, even underneath on the bottom. Its your preference.

Holy shit, I haven't hit a gravity bong since senior year of high school at a house party. We did it in a bath tub with a 2L soda bottle.
