Spore longevity and viability question!
    #2696591 - 05/18/04 02:32 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

Hi, I have two questions:

1. How long will an unrefrigerated spore syringe stay viable? I searched the site and found that a refrigerated one should last "about 6 months or longer" -- but what about one sitting at room temperature??

2. What temperature will make spores useless/ "kill" them?

Thank you!!

conditions that'd kill them? i dunno. maybe freezing them for ages, or frying them in a pan - haven't seen any data on that. i've seen plenty of reports, though, of room temp syringes germinating after a year or two. probably depends on spore viability, what your 'room temp' is, humidity etc etc.

you need an expert. Anno? Joshua? Workman? Teonan? MJ?

#1 - Viability will decline with age. While a syringe that is a month old will produce explosive growth, one that is 6 months old will produce sporadic growth. Longevity of the syringe is difficult to predict. The biggest problem with storing a syringe at room temperature is that bacteria in the syringe (if present) will multiply much faster at the warmer temperature.

#2 - I have heard 106F, but I imagine thermal death temperatures are variable for species...
