Heating mat positioned in the lid
    #26965561 - 10/02/20 09:38 AM (3 years, 4 months ago)

A few hours digging in the forum regarding heating mats learns that heating mats are hated deeply. My first ever mushroom growkit  was ruined because of a heating mat. And now just recently an experiment with a heating mat also turned into contamination (but not obliteration).

You would say I maybe have learned my lesson? I have definitely learned that the mycelium does not like to be heated from the bottom, so I figured, give it 1 more to try, to see if it likes it from the top?
Thus I have installed a heating mat in the lid. With scepticism though. It's about 30 centimetres (12 inches) above the mycelium. Eventhough there's a distance I am worried that it might dry out the mycelium and be a potential source of contamination.

I welcome your thoughts

Mushrooms don't require heat radiation from above nor underneath, they grow perfectly fine in normal room temperature. Through time it has been proven over and over that the more electrical components you I corporate in your grow the lower your chances of success will be

Yeah it’s a waste of time and material.

What temperature is your grow spot? Over winter I fruited tubs in temps down to the low 50s with no problem.

what you say about incorporating electronics - I am starting to wake up to that reality after tinkering with a lot of bells and whistles now. Interesting thread you have on the water tub tek, might try something like that in the future.

Right now the temperature is okay with 19 degrees Celsius (66F) however with the onset of winter coming I know I can expect temperatures around 15 degrees Celsius (59F) on the grow spot, so I was more preparing for that eventuality.

To be clear, I am growing Golden Teachers, which are tropical mushrooms, they are supposed to have an optimum growing temperature of 23 or 24 degrees Celsius (73 or 75F) depending on which source you choose to believe. Some sources will also state that under 18C (64F) fruiting is going to be problematic.

Yes cubes are tropical mushrooms and you can grow them in 30C as you see in this grow of mine

But I have also grown them in 17-18C and they grow just as fine, only difference is they grow faster in higher Temps and slower in lower Temps
