Really old BRF cakes left in jars - only 1 fruited. And other questions...
    #26963794 - 10/01/20 12:35 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

So I had some successful BRF cakes in 1 pint jars. They colonized somewhat slowly with older spores, but still colonized. I accidentally left them for about 4 or 5 months. At least 2 or 3 months after they finished colonizing.

I birthed them anyway, soaked them 24 hours in cold water, covered them in verm, and then put in a shotgun fruiting chamber.

Out of 9 cakes, only 1 seemed to produce any mushrooms. And not very many. The others seem dormant. They're not being contaminated, but they're not producing anything. It's been about a month that they've been in the chamber.

I mist them enough to keep the surface moist, but not too often. Maybe once every other day. Other than that I mist the sides of the chamber to keep humidity up.

Did I just leave them for too long in their jars? Did they run out of resources/food to produce mushrooms? Should I just mash them down and try to case the dormant cakes with some peat and verm? Give it something to eat.

I also had another question. I started some fresh jars with newer spores, and they're colonizing much faster. However, some of the jars appear to have two types of mycelium. I'm wondering if it's contamination?

You can see on the left the mycelium is less structured, more "fluffy", while the mycelium on the right has more structure and has definite threads/hyphae.

I recall reading about "reproductive" mycelium which tends to produce thick threads like those seen on the right, and then colonizing mycelium which just spreads out and is fluffy. Is that what I am seeing, or is it indeed contamination?

Thanks!

I found the answer to my second question, in case anyone was wondering.

The "fluffy" mycelium is called "tomentose" mycelium, and is associated with "bulk" older growth. The "stringy" mycelium is called "rhizomorphic", and is associated with new, adventitious growth. It apparently contains peroxides which break down and "digest" newly encountered material. The tomentose mycelium then comes in and bulk-colonizes the rest, further breaking things down.

Primordia arise from rhizomorphic mycelium, so fruiting bodies will be seen growing from this stage of mycelial growth.
