Good idea. It would probably do great. It gives the cakes more moisture which is what a casing does.

I think that would be effective since I've seen shrooms always grow from the verm layer. I don't quite understand this, since on photos at PF they have shrooms growing from all over on the cake.

Can anyone simplify this for me?

Pins form on the vermiulite layer well because it provides lots of little nooks and crannies (which they just love). It also provides a little extra moisture, but that's not the reason they form on it. The cake can really gather all the extra moisture it needs (on a first flush) from the surrounding enviornment, assuming you've got 95-100% humidity.

Ok. I'm going to try it and I'm going to put a drinking straw down to the middle layer of vermiculite too. I've got some jars ready in a week to ten days. I'll take a pretty picture of a BigMac cake.
