TIL that the majority of "wild" pacific salmon is farmed in hatcheries and released. Where they outcompete other wild fish and as many have noted are not as healthy as their wild counterparts.
These hatcheries are subsidized with tax dollars at $60,000 per fish with 300,000,000 fish per year. It's billions of dollars.
If the USPS is a major drain on taxpayer dollars I think we have bigger fish to fry first.

Sorry that's per fish they harvest back from the water to "farm". I don't know how many they harvest back but I found another figure that says that each fish hatchery costs an average of 20 million dollars on upkeep per year. So... maybe you can math that out mr math wizard.

Definitely mistaken. We're talking minute fractions of 18 trillion.
Millions maybe. Definitely not billions and certaintly not trillions.
The 1st hemp farm I worked on in colorado was an old trout hatchery that went under and couldnt get assistance. The owner killed himself and his wife leased the hatchery to my boss.
Bays of the spawn house filled with drying hemp

There's different types of fisheries. These are talking about salmon in the pnw.
Trout I imagine would have problems in recent years when we realized stocking trout in waters they're not native to isn't a great idea. And it's not as big of a consumer fish as salmon.
Tbh I knew almost nothing of fish farming before the documentary I watched this morning so I'm open to being orrected. I had always imagined fish farms were all enclosed tanks where fish live until they're ready to go on the dinner plate. But I admit in retrospect it probably depends on the goal of the hatchery. If you want to circulate the fish back to fisherman of course you'd have to release them.
Even still it was just a recent example of something I think should be reexamined. A bigger fish to fry that I'm more familiar with is the military. Yall know about the figher jets they are spending billions on that are supposed to be the be all end all to replace the air force fighter jets but the project is stalling because they are not working as advertised?
Or a home grown example, my dear sweet former governor spent over 40 million dollars on a highway project over epa protected land that never broke ground.
We do need a national mail service. I'm not sure how much we need bureaucrats signing bills that make them sound good on projects that are doomed.
Or how about how we spent over 2 billion dollars on our cancelled particle accelerator in Texas, before any part of the machine itself was built?

I had hemp shoes a while back. They were pretty much indestructible, I used them pretty heavily for skateboarding and other than dirt and some scuffs they were practically like-new a decade later. They had a hidden stash pocket under the sizing label

most fisheries feed the fish bullshit, like grain/corn fed cows, wild caught fish are much better

Ya I know there's a difference in management(although trout are salmonids and they also did kokanee salmon to stock reservoirs)
Trout can naturalize though so they really dont need much hatchery help. Rainbow, cutthroat, brook trout, bull trout, humpback trout are all native to N. American waters, but brown trout are an introduced species that have thrived here and have even dominated other native trout sections of rivers over

They look pretty similar so that makes sense.
Come to think of it I'm not sure I've ever had trout. Do they have pink meat too?
I don't think it's outright harmful to restock but you have to do it with ecology in mind and ecology is a complex thing. I'd rather us just not overfish and fix some of these old dams that block spawning routes.
There's a few ponds and lakes I can think of where game fish such as trout were introduced. Though I can't think of any instance where they go absolutely crazy like the snakehead and asian carp.
My concern is just that between pollution and global warming it can get real bad if you introduce yet another factor that throws the ecosystem out of balance.
Also worthy of note: now, with ecosystems rapidly changing, is not the time to be artificially breeding and preserving and encouraging the weak links in the gene pool. You want the fish that are ready to deal with algae blooms and smart enough to climb up fish ladders on dams and hardy enough to deal with different temperatures, ph levels, phosphorus, and all the other stuff in the water.
Releasing a million genetically inferior specimens after giving them a head start could out compete the fewer hardier individuals.
Now I'm not saying that's happening exactly like that. Just a small chunk of what you have to consider when you're manipulating ecology.

Yes older larger trout specimens have pink meat
Here's a freshly caught and gutted brown

Trout are friggen delicious. My favorite fish by far. My chick loved atlantic salmon and I kept trying to tell her wild trout was much better. First time I made it for her she swore off store bought fish for life

How does one season trout?
I tried perch for the first time recently and it tasted strangely minty. I'm not sure if it's something I did or if it's a minty fish...

yep! One kitchen I worked in made a seasoned butter that we would ladle onto a flat top grill then put the fish on that. You can also prep the fish an hour or more ahead of time with seasoning on it and then wrap it in a container or plastic wrap on a plate and let it marinate.
