First cultivation
    #26961772 - 09/30/20 10:50 AM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Hi there,

I'm a newbie at this. It's my first grow.  I initially used an all in one grow bag and now transferred it to another container.  I was wondering if anyone can tell if it's ok and not contaminated.  I think a few mushrooms are well developed and would it be ok to pick those and leave the others to later?

Many thanks

That looks like quite a mess. Depending on the time line uncultivated area next to cultivated usually indicates a competing organism in the uncultivated area. You can definitely use the mushrooms. But you should get your system straight. Clone one of the mushrooms on agar, isolate twice on agar, then transfer to grain then to substrate. Like the big boys do it.

Thanks for the reply.  Yep definitely does.  I think my next attempt should be a lot better.  I think using agar might be the best solution to avoid contamination issues.  I don't think this is contaminated but the mycellium didn't colonise properly in the all in one grow bag.  Do you think it would be ok to cut the mushrooms now or wait a bit longer?

Many thanks

You can harvest them as the caps start to open.  Or harvest them all now.  Or wait till tomorrow.  It really doesn't matter, up to you!

Thanks so much. I removed a few of them.  I've got some pictures below. Sorry to ask so many questions but do you think they look fine.  I will be drying them out later.  I'll make my next attempt a proper job.

You vacuum sealed those wet? You might want to get out of there before they get mushy. The condensation in an airtight environment will build up and they will spoil pretty quickly. You can store them in a paper bag in the fridge for a few days if you’re not ready to dry them yet.

Thanks for the advice. I opened up the seal but planning on dehydrating them later today.

I'm drying them now but they've already turned black after just 4 or 5 hours.  I've given them a wash as the black is supposed to be spores but they're still black even after washing.  Would it still be fine to dry and then eat?

Many thanks

Theyll be fine to eat, but most of your actives are likely oxidized. That's what the black is. The flesh was damaged when you vacuumed them fresh. They might not amount to much as far as effect.

Always treat fresh fruits delicately. Eat them or dry them immediately. The longer you fuss around or handle them roughly (vacuum sealing them fresh, washing them, etc), the more goods get degraded.

In the future, if you have to wait to dry them, leave them in open air - the worst thing you could have done was what you did, unfortunately :frown:

Thanks for the advice.  I've got some mycllium growing on some agar so that will be used for my next grow.  I've managed to get a few more mushrooms from the current grow.  Anyone know if these are safe to pick now or a bit later on?

Many thanks

I’d pick them now unless you’re going to print them.

all the mushrooms in the thread look fine to harvest/eat.

don't vacuum seal them fresh. you have to dehydrate them right away.

as to your cake, you have a lot to learn about developing clean spawn. look into bod's agar tek and get started with that. agar is the way to clean up what you're working with

Thanks so much, those mushrooms have now been harvested. I have a few others growing in this grow but I think there is some contamination.  Would these mushrooms still be safe to pick?  I think there's a could be ready to pick.  There's a few pins that haven't grown at all. I'm not sure what the reason is.

They’re fine, it’s just bruising from being dry.

The shrooms all look healthy.
