Why do we apply casings on some species in monotubs?

What is the purpose of casings on top of substrate/spawn mix? Is it for contamination defense, better colonization?

Instead of me trying to give my explanation as I understand it, I'll quote from a much more trusted source. That thread is 7 years old, so it's possible that some info is not totally up to date, but from the many casing threads I've looked into this has definitely been one of the most helpful. In terms of contams, I don't think that that's one of the benefits, at least not with cubes (dunno about casings in other species). I only use coir and/or verm as my bulk substrates and those are MUCH less likely to contaminate than a peat moss casing. Casings need true, proper pasteurization precisely to avoid contams, while coir or coir/verm don't need to be actually pasteurized

1. Protect colonized substrate from drying out. 2. Provide a microclimate favorable for primordia formation. 3. Provide moisture for mushroom growth. 4. Promotes stimulation of pinning by signaling mycellium it is out of nutrition and time to reproduce.
Let's get this out of the way first...
This is about how to make and apply a casing layer. This casing layer can be used for most species but I will be discussing cubes in this thread. I don't want this thread to become a debate about whether or not cubensis benefits from a casing layer. Please stay on topic.

Dayum meowjinx with the reply.
I'll just add this, compilation of like 5(?) TCs talking about casing (cubes) with pics https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26503618

I'have seen some people casing full colonized tubes with coir (straight from the bag, no past or ster) then put then on fruit conditions.
A casing considering 50% verm + 50% coir and gypsum really needs to be pasteurized or sterilized?

Only peat based casings need pasteurization.
Anything else technically isn't a casing
