Hello! I made a small laboratory for collecting spores into syringes and injections. but accidentally irradiated spores in syringes by UVC for 5 minutes my question is they are dead or I have the chance to grow mycelium? Thanks!

was there any plastic involved shielding the spores in your situation, 99?
cause UV absorbing materials which are many i think, should very quickly stop UV shouldnt it?
syriinges usually from PP?

Yep it was usual 10ml plastic syringes! Do you think that some spores wasn’t killed?

No one could know. Its a bad question. Just try them. Literally only thing people can do is guess yes or guess no.

Yes, most people could only guess. But I found research how long some spores can stay alive during UVC irradiation. But this research doesn’t contain info about cubensis spores. Different kind of spores can resist irraditiation from 30 sec till 20 minutes. By the way I will try to grow something and write here the result 👍

Time is a useless measure for irradiation. You need energy delivered. Wattage and distance make time different for each setup

Everything is good! Irradiation of spores in plastic syringes for 5 mins UVC 252nm Distance 0.5m 8w
The mycelium starts to grow!

Makes you wonder how effective your UV treatment really is

Most plastics block short wavelengths like that. The syringe probably saved the spores.

Also, if some UVC did get through, you might get some cool mutants. Be prepared to clone

That could be an interesting rabbit hole to go down. Is there some level of radiation that one could send to spores to fuck with their DNA to cause mutations? Could those mutations yield beneficial/harmful results on cosmetics or performance? How could we test this and has anyone tried with this before?
