Media bottle exploded, what did I do wrong?!?!

I had a bottle of sterilized MEA in the fridge that I pulled out and slowly microwaved to get to liquid to pour some dishes. I had a large plastic bowl of warm water to put it in as a water bath to get the temp down to pour. There wasn't enough water to reach the level of the agar. I put the bowl with media bottle under the faucet and started adding more water, about the same temp as what was already in there. Before reaching the level of the agar, the bottle exploded (or possibly imploded?), throwing glass, agar, and water all over.
Ended up EXTREMELY lucky with only a tiny cut on my thumb. However, I'm not wanting to try my luck again, plus cleaning that up sucked. So, what did I screw up, because I don't want to recreate that surprise.

was it a real borosilicate glass media vessel? or a reused food/drink container?
if it wasn't borosilicate, then yes, dramatically heat/cooling cheap soda-lime glass will cause it to fail. its like when you put an ice cube in a drink and it pops and cracks. same thing happens to soda-lime when exposed to extreme temperature differences.

Here is the bottles, media bottles from Amazon. According to the description they are borosilicate.

Sounds like thermal shock to me. The microwave is very uneven at heating so if even 1 spot of the glass was 200*F and it hit water that was like 70*, it would probably explode. Seems like it imploded cuz the cap was probably on tight

Next time, put the bottle in your Pressure cooker with a piece of foil on the opening with the cap lightly screwed down. PC at 15 psi for 40 minutes. Wait until it cools down then pour your plates.

borosilicate glass has a thermal shock range of over 300*F, so it might not be legit

Interesting, I’m thinking it’s either thermal shock or there was pressure inside the media bottle / not real boro

I PC'ed then tightened the lid and removed foil before placing in the fridge. I didn't loosen the lid before microwaving or putting in the water bath, I figured this would compromise the sterility. Should I have loosened the lid?

I tend to throw them in the fridge/freezer to lower temps quicker, checking every 10-15 mins till ready to pour.
Never had problems, granted my fridge/ freezer isn't that cold.

Sorry, to clarify, I sterilized this a week ago, it was cool when I put it in the fridge. I did multiple bottles to reheat easily later per bod's agar tek. Pulled it out of the fridge today to microwave it so I could pour more dishes.

I gotcha. The only thing I can think of is that it was solid and a small portion got super hot and when you put it in the water it exploded

I've had this happen by forgetting to loosen the cap before microwaving. I assume you did though?

Media bottles, borosilicate or not, fail sometimes. Borosilicate glass is great if it is made well and annealed properly. Borosilicate glass when made well is also incredibly strong and is very unlikely to break from a bit of vacuum pressure.

Please be careful with these seemingly cheap offers of media bottles on Amazon or Ebay. Many people who got these "3 bottles for 15$" reported them breaking and spilling agar all over their legs/arms in the past (can't find the posts but they exist). Legit Pyrex media bottles cost 15$ each, have super thick glass and will withstand cold/hot temperature shocks with no problems.

Was the lid tight the entire time. It probably failed from vacuum pressure.

I had one explode recently. I had just microwaved it help to dissolve the powder and was pouring hot water from my sink into the pressure cooker when it happened. It was legit boro glass and I've done it the same way probably hundreds of times before but never will again. Lid was loose while microwaving and when it broke.

Yup, lid was tight the entire time. So if I'm reheating a pre sterilized bottle, I should loosen the lid I take it?
Thanks.
