In a pickle with fine coco coir
    #26959811 - 09/29/20 07:22 AM (3 years, 3 months ago)

I have 3 quarts of wbs spawn fully colonized and ready for my 12q shoebox. I did the bucket Tek 650g 8 cups fine verm and 4 quarts boiling water. I came back an hour later to find the bucket was just one big soupy substrate🄓. I know now that it's a difference between coir in bag form than brick form as it's compressed. My question is what should my ratio be with with coir that is already shredded? First timer here. Greatly appreciate it.

I take it you're not weighing the coir?  I would think compressed or uncompressed wouldn't matter so long as you're weighing it.

I weighed the fine coco coir. It came out to 645g of fine coco coir. It's really fine which is throwing off my spawn , boiling water ratios. What would you do for 3 quarts wbs and a 12q shoebox ?

Do you have a link to the coir you're using?  Am I reading right in your first post that you used ~650g coir, plus 8 cups verm, and then added 4Qt boiling water to that?

I'm really not seeing how it would make any difference if it were compressed or not prior to adding the water.  You could take a 650g compressed brick and shred it up prior to hydrating it, and it'll still hold the same amount of water.

I forgot to mention that it is already fluff and moist to the touch. Stored in room temp

Is it already somewhat hydrated?  Looking up that product, I see them claiming that the more shredded the fiber is, the more water it'll hold.  One thing you could try if you're really having trouble is just taking a small amount (say 250g) and slowly adding measured amounts of water to it until you hit field capacity.  That would at least get you in the ballpark of how much boiling water you needed to add.

That will make all the difference in the world.  I'd try and find a different product that isn't hydrated.
