is drying ASAP really required?
    #26959739 - 09/29/20 05:22 AM (3 years, 3 months ago)

There are people that dry in a span of 2-3 days total that I don't see having problems. I also read here somewhere that somebody stored shrooms in the cooler(it absorbed moisture) and have seen minimal potency loss. What is everybody's experience on this?

My dehydrator has been on 24/7 so I tend to air-dry fresh mushrooms for a day before it hits the dehydrator. People always say it needs to be cracker-dry or it loses potency, is there factual evidence in this or just anecdotal? Obviously oxidation happens to everything but how much does it really affect our fruits?

If you don't dry them right away they start degrade. The enzymes are still "alive". Throw them in the fridge if you can't dry them right away.

Once they're cracker dry if they pick up some moisture they're not necessarily ruined but keep them dry

Bod, I think that was you with the cooler shrooms, was it? I read it a while ago here on shroomery. Anyways, the fridge is communal so I wont have that option but I thought about it

Doesn't higher temperature speed up oxidation? I personally find it hard to believe that leaving it in open-air for a some days would degrade it any faster than the dehydrator drying at 71degrees

Yeah but the dehydrator is pointless running at 71.

The more time it’s wet exposed to air the more damage could be done. That said I’ve left some out for a day or two before using the dehydrator and not noticed problems so far.

I had a bunch of shrooms that I dried to "cracker dry" and put in a jar with what I thought was dry desiccant. I came back 12 months later and discovered that some moisture got into the jar. Either my desiccant wasn't completely dry, or the seal failed on my jar. The shrooms had re-absorbed some moisture and they were no longer "cracker dry". They were more "bendy".

I tried to trip 3 times from the shrooms out of that jar before giving up. All of the mushrooms in that jar were completely impotent. NOTHING.

I've dried shrooms and consumed later many times with no problems. Allowing them to come in contact with moisture will damage the active ingredients.
