10 days before i looked and think it may have been colonized for a few days already. Used 1:4 ratio roughly. Original grain was millet.

The mono that I ran was higher spawn ratio and just went crazy and got a thick marshmallow rubbery layer. Also started to smell really bad and not one pin in 5 weeks so I eventually tossed it in the garden.

Curios to see if these actually look anything like the ones we find wild in the midlands once they grow out a bit.

Yeah I ran one of my last tubs with 40-50% the usual amount of spawn and it seemed to help the myc situation.

There might be something to millet too, I just colonized my first jar of almost all millet and didn’t get crazy rhizo on the glass like normal. I guess it could be from using clone myc that’s been transferred a bunch of times too though.

It sucks getting good results when there’s a bunch of variables.

Those look odd for natalensis but im seeing those weird gills. I like how they're not all talk and spindly, but I think the taller the fruits the more weight (as compared to tall pans, they'll always be light because they're much less meaty)

Yeah could be because it’s in a shoebox and I didn’t dub tub it just left the lid on so the fruits were just pushing up against the lid. I had it dub tubbed but I put the lid on because it’s the fifth or so flush and I needed more room for other stuff. My other nat mini mono had super long fruits

Those are cool celestial way more normal looking than a lot of them are. And the crazy gills.

So far so good on the hwfp grow. I put a decent top layer of just coir on and about 36 hours in there’s the first rhizo poking through.

Feeling good about this one. I’m convinced between it being a narrowed down clone, 100% confident in the spawn and the hwfp I’ll get at least one surface pin this time!

Just an update on how these NSS are doing

Not the greatest flush. To me these look like little pale cubes except they bruise green. Gills look normal with these as well

Man your plates look so different from mine.

So far so good with the mini hwfp grow at 3.5 days.

Getting to that crucial stage. Kinda looks like some parts are starting to spread out which is how the overlay begins, hopefully it stays tame this time.

Where are the natalensis growing when you find them in the field? The photo which has been posted of a wild specimen looks like the fruit is pushing up from under a thick layer of grass.

This was found on a cattle farm in the Natal midlands. Was some grass in the area but mostly cow crap and soil.

I don’t believe that this is Natalensis although found in Natal. Unless Natalensis is just another cube.

Identified Ps. Natalensis from Mushroom Observer

This is what I think some members in the thread are growing, and the photo reminds me of a local mushroom whose fruits punch holes up through our grass overnight when it rains in August and some woodlover grows I’ve seen with fruits pushing up through moss or grass top layers.

Yeah I tend to think that we’ve got a mix of actual natalensis and a cube from natalensis in here too.

Definitely the calmest plate I’ve had yet. Again there’s a ton a variables though. I’m guessing it’s due to this batch of plates being weird from a miscalculation adding powder to a media bottle a third full of agar from earlier. I think it’s super hard and like 2.5x normal lme.

But then again it’s by far the most I’ve isolated a natalensis culture. I’ve been running mostly t1 or t2 ms cultures while this is t4 from a clone and I’ve been doing the tiniest transfer wedges ever.

Same culture t2, also on normal agar though.

My natalensis is starting to overlay and create these crazy weird aerial structures, almost looks like coral or trees.

Yep that’s the good stuff.

The rhizo starts to fan out and fluff up and then some of it will start growing huge. So far the most effective thing I’ve found is to use very little spawn. Like half a quart to a shoebox.

Yours actually doesn’t look too bad there’s a lot of open real estate still.

Noted, I think I used a pint of spawn or less for this shoebox.

How the mushroom looks (macroscopically) doesn't necessarily have anything to do with which species it is.

Alan said Psilocybes species are mostly defined by microscopic characteristics.

The best way to say something about them being the same species or not is to get the DNA sequence and associate a difference in the sequence with a difference in microscopic characteristics, if I understand correctly.

A number of pages back I made a comparison between microscopic characteristics of descriptions I had access to, I couldn't find any at least not ones that I personally would dare call different with my limited experience, like in cystidia shapes.

However seems I missed something or it wasn't in that description I had, but one of the two is supposed to have caulocystidia but not the other one. These are a type of sterile cell with usually typical shape (cystidia), but this particular type of cystidia is found at the top of the stipe and unlike other sorts of cystidia is rather large and can often be made out with the naked eye or better yet loupe.

I need to better confirm that snippet of information - not sure where i got it from, and see which one is supposed to have what, but that would be the only thing really worth comparing while waiting on the barcode sequence.
(note: not to be confused with cheilocystidia!)
