Hello everyone. It's been quite some time since I posted here, partly due to just life in general, but also due to some legal issues causing me to be sent away for an extended period of time. But that is neither here nor there. This thread is a place where I'll be posting any photos & videos from escapades over the coming months, answer any questions anyone has of me, and in general try to get back into the groove of posting here a bit more regular.
To those of you that I've interacted with over the years, I'm glad to be with you all again. Those who I've yet to get to know or interact with, I hope you will find posts in this thread helpfull, educational, and above all entertaining. I would also like to take this opportunity to apologize to those of you who are deserving of it, you know who you are. I'm saddened and upset with myself at times due to how my own personal problems affected individuals here, and for that I am truly sorry, and hope you will accept a heartfelt apology.
But enough of that. For the first post, I'll have only a few photos taken from today. Been hunting chants since about the end of June and have had plenty of luck in new areas now that I've relocated to Bellingham. Today was no exception, but also stumbled into an area with lots of lobsters. So, without further adieu.
A few pics of some chants from today and a general habitat picture. All in all got about 15 lbs over the course of about 3 hours.

Lobster habitat photo

Another habitat photo with one way in the background.

Ok, that's all I got for now. Photos aren't the greatest since I don't have access to my computer anymore, so just using the cell for now. I'll be updating as much as possible and will be checking back regularly to answer any questions, talk to those of you I've missed, and post updates as I am able.
Best of luck out there everyone, and happy hunting.

What do you do with lobster mushrooms? I've seen plenty of them but I'm intimidated when it comes to using them as food

Either just saute them in oil, or wash in egg, roll in crushed up Ritz and deep fry. You gotta catch them at the right time tho, they shouldn't have a stinky smell or darker colored flesh. They can be a bit intimidating due to their appearance, time consuming to clean, smell, and texture, but they are probably my 2nd favorite edible just behind Matsutake.
The other day I cut zucchini into thin strips, put chunks of fried lobsters, bit of garlic, cilantro and mozzarella, then rolled them up, wash in egg & roll in Panko, then deep fried for about 5 minutes.
Hope this helps

More chants and lobsters. I'm disgraced by shitty video nowadays....

I'm disgusted at myself for the video quality. Hoping to drop about 2k on new comp and another 1-2k on camera equipment by end of October, but we will see how budget works out with baby on the way.

Thanks for the kind words, and I'm honored something like that helped another person decide to take up fungi hunting. Wish I could have been a bit more productive in the past few years but hoping to make up for it this season. Hope all is well with you, and happy hunting.

That last video is a bit confusing. I run an app that shows any sex offenders in the area. Basically bus ride with child diddler.

You too have helped me tremendously with all of your videos at first and then reading all the old forums. I have much to learn still from all the info you’ve provided and I truly appreciate that. Beautiful chanterelle video as well some good tips Forsure and all around a dope hunting video as usual. Also, anyone who does that kinda thing to kids is super fucked in the mind or evil as can be and that shit sickens me to the core.

Hey, welcome back! And with a boom, too. Those are some nice finds. I don't think we have lobster mushroom here in Norway.
Are the ones you find mainly hosted by Russula brevipes? Does the host's original flavour come through at all?

Quite the question, and it's very nice to see you around Angler. You've always intrigued me , so it's a bit intimidating to answer this question, but I'll do the best I can.
From what I've seen, in my area Russula xerampelina are the main species that are infected by Hypomyces lactifluorum, but that doesn't rule out other species of Russula, because I can't for sure say other species haven't become assimilated by the spores of the Hypo.
I like to think of lobsters much like the Borg, assimilate or die. But at the same time it not so simple. I've seen lobsters assimilating and growing healthy next to healthy right next to the exact species it should be attacking.
In my mind, it's not a battle. The two species fight each other for sure, hence pictures I've taken where gills from the host species are still prevalent. But this is just conjection. I think they may give up specific fruiting grounds & habitat to each other based off of optimal fruiting grounds. I've seen huge patches of lobsters in perfect fruiting grounds right next to patches of Russula emetica. I truly think it is more difficult to explain the relationship between the two species than what we would like to admit.
Lobster mushrooms are one of my favorites not only due to what they are, where they grow, but because of what they actually accomplish.
But I don't think I actually answered your question in any shape or form. I apologize and will dig deeper for your answer

To answer further, I can't exactly say if taste came through after assimilation, because I haven't ate any Russula species in question. But I do sense a difference in taste of lobsters due to habitat, substrate, and their general appearance, which may have some sort of semblance to species attacked and assimilated. I'm just guessing, and this is 100% conjecture.
I have noticed different tastes and flavors that are prevalent In lobsters, but that could be due to their age, substrate, or possibly species assimilated. I would like to study them further, but it's a hard subject due to their rarity in my area, let alone possibilities of infecting different species causing different tastes, flavors and even structure of fruiting bodies

It is probably a symbiotic relationship. Kind of lichens are made, two species combing to Create something entirely new

Added to meatloaf, but fried a bit first in hot butter and rosemary with a dash of salt.
