I reckon the first 4 and 6th in the first pic are libs, I cant say for sure about the rest. 5 looks a little off but could be a lib, the last 2 are a little bit far gone for me to correctly identify.

Hi all, temperatures in the Chilterns seem to have been in the right range for the past few days, and there's been a reasonable amount of rainfall. In the forests there are quite a few autumn season mushrooms growing - but in the fields and pastures, I am finding absolutely nothing, let alone liberty caps. I'm looking at the highest altitudes you get in the area, 240-260 meters.
In previous years, and I've tried for a few now, I've found plenty of mushrooms that often seem to be occur in similar habitats to the liberty cap (the inkcap etc) but the libs have been conspicuous by their absence.
Do you think I am better off traveling elsewhere to wilder and higher terrain than the Chilterns?

That's where I went yesterday and no luck at all, though it was my first time and I didn't find many good pasture spots to wander. But even where it did look good, nothing, not many fungi in general.

Bigshroommofo said: Finally!!!! Been 2 days of good rain now where I am in the SE, going to have a quick look today but not sure if I will be successful as we had extremely hot weather for a long period before this. Let me know if you are successful in the SE also
I've been the same, anxiously waiting for some rain down here in SE, as had seen nothing on brief ventures locally and further afield NW and W of London I'm new here and not sure how general I have to remain on spots, but I'm back after 10 years away so am just setting out on discovering forage spots again. Since the rain came, I went NW of London yesterday and S of London today, soils looked OK on soil profile. But nothing! Yesterday's spot didn't look right, too scrubby. Today I found some perfect pastures (though with cows rather than sheep) but still nothing! Not an inkling, and not much other fungi either. Do they need longer to emerge? Well, I will be patient and keep trying. Hearing similar outlook from this area helps reassure. Want to be in Scotland or Wales! Have you had any luck Bigshroommofo?

Thanks for the response. Maybe it's just the fact that it hasn't been a long time since we were having 20 plus temperatures, so possibly they'll just need a little longer to work through. Looks like plenty of rainfall and roughly correct temperatures this week, so possibly things could get moving by next weekend ... though as I say I've looked for a few years now and found lots of small mushrooms in fields, but never the ones I'm after ...

Went back too the same field as yesterday too pick up from where i left off. I managed too find these beauties. 170g Wet today in just a couple of hours. They were absolutely everywhere, massive patches of them spread all over. In the dehydrator now, should be dry in a couple of hours hopefully.
( SW Wales ) It's Booming down here at the moment, looks like there is going to be alot this year..

Hello!!! Glad to see your back at it hunting again. Unfortunately I still haven’t seen any signs of mushrooms in my usual fields. I went on a longer walk to figure out if the fields have gone dry or see if it’s the conditions, and throughout this woodland walk I saw possibly only 1 or 2 mushrooms in total which makes me really think we will have to wait a week or so. So don’t be too worried yet, think because of the unusually hot weather and little rain we are going to have to be more patient in the SE and our season will be shorter but this doesn’t mean we won’t get any. I’ll post it on here as soon as I find some so hopefully it will give a indication for a good time to look. Anyone else found any in the SE let us know!
Edit: just checked the forecast and I have got more 17degree+ and dry weather forecast. Very frustrating

Walked about 10k of open grassland at the Peak District today and found a total of about 10 mushrooms, no libs. Ground is far too dry. In comparison I found 100's of LBM when out like a month ago. We need a good soaking to make up for the warm and dry weather. Jealous of the Scottish and Welsh people at the minute.

Finished drying em all off from the last 3 trips i been on. Whammed inside some mason jars with a couple of silica gel packets i bought in bulk for cheap online. I've taped the packs too the top of the lid, is that ok too do it that way instead of emptying into bottom of jar? All 3 Jar's came up too 40g Cracker Dry Weight, Not too bad if you ask me. Here's some pics of them now.

Went for a good old forage around Richmond Park. I did not see any liberty caps today. Just thought I'd share.

For gods sake be you careful man.. you have libs there but you clearly aren’t to sure of what you are picking. Just do a little research on them to clue yourself up.

Thank you for the feedback. Yeah I've been through this thread from top to bottom over the weekend with a view to really honing my proficiency in spotting, and I've since chucked quite a few that I was unsure about. Any further insight on my finds will always be appreciated 😊

Hi people, keen to get started for the year, does anybody know the ideal temperature for finding liberty caps in the UK?
