Gotta toss it huh?

It's been 4 days since I inoculated these jars. I have them sitting in an incubator tub that keeps the temp at about 78-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Today is the first day I noticed any mycelium growth and this jar has the most of it, along with those ugly specks.

Yeah that doesn't look good...
BTW don't use an incubator, room temp is fine unless for some weird reason you can't get your room temps above 60F

Would it be possible to save the jar itself? Would steaming it for 2 hours sterilize it for future use?

Sure, although the dishwasher is probably fine

I'm not 100% sure that's even a bad jar.

I'm not either. Put them away, and dont look at them for a week or two. Just ignore them. Then put up some pics.

If you have a flowerpot around you could try to save it by taking the mycelium out of the jar and into the pot with a little bit of soil.

Ok, will do. It's only this jar so far. The other 7 aren't showing much more if any mycelium growth yet. I'll put it away from the others just to be extra safe.

There is barely any mycelium on the cake. Would taking it out and putting it in soil trigger super early and stunted fruiting? I apologize if this is a stupid question :/

True, it's always hard to tell with vermiculite in there, but that black part looked like sporulating mold. Could also not be

That's very fast growth for 4 days, likely dodgy. I'd just put it to one side and see what happens in a few more days.
What's your ambient room temp? I only ask as you likely don't need them in any sort of incubation chamber.

When its time to fruit your mike I would recommend to make it as close to a 1:1 spawn:sub ratio as possible. Its very easy to add too little spawn or too much sub and then the project might not take off. What did you do to sterilize your jars? Its completely normal for a jar to go bad every once and awhile. This is a numbers game so keep pumping out fresh jars. For now, maybe just let the jars do their thing for another week or 2. Keep the potentially bad jar away from the others. If that jar ends up being too bad to use with the others, the mike may still grow more so take it to the flower pot and cross your fingers. The fruits come when they are ready to come so I would not worry too much about stunted fruits. Id rather small shrooms then just tossing the whole thing

My room temp hovers around the high 60s to mid-70s. It can get colder than that at night as I don't usually heat it up. I've cleared out my closet for the jars and store them in there on a shelf. The temp in there seems a bit more stable. I didn't have the jars in an incubator for two days, then on the third, I bought an aquarium heater and incubated them. The temp in it hovered around 74-80, with the jars themselves probably being a couple of degrees warmer. I turned off the heater for the night, as I was kinda worried about letting that thing run in my closet overnight, although it's probably safe.
I had not seen any growth the day before the incubator and only saw it in the morning after about 12 hours of my jars being warmed up. The jar in the pics is the only one that had that much growth. Only about two more are just now catching up to the level the first was at and only a full day later. I took all the jars out of the incubator for all of yesterday, and it seems like the rate of mycelium spread slowed.

I boiled and steamed the jars in a stovetop pot for two hours, after which I left them there to cool overnight.
I would have to buy another MS to keep making fresh jars, so would it be wiser to just buy a PC and learn agar to save money and time from the start? Something tells me I won't get a healthy jar my first try

Agar is amazing. Definitely worth getting into 100x over. It might seem a little intimidating at first but its not that hard. I dont have a PC yet and I still use agar. When you finally get some fruit, spore print everything so you have something to fall back on. I do the same thing for boiling (use a lid). Save your empty MS and refill once you hit that level. Even if the grow goes tits up you could still try the flowerpot method. I'm really surprised that there isn't more hype on the flowerpot. Its super beginner friendly and gets pretty great yield considering its done with crappy spawn

High 60s to mid 70s is totally fine. I'd ditch the incubator, even if only to save energy, as it's not needed.
You do want fast growth, but only of the mycelium...
How is that jar looking today?
If you can, post some pics of that jar and another showing growth for comparison.

Thanks for the reply! I'll wait until I get some fruit, then I'll spore print and start with agar. That seems like the best way to continue. I didn't know you could do agar without a PC, all the teks make it seem like you can't advance to agar without one. Hearing that you don't use one brings my hopes up Everywhere I look, the big stovetop ones are either sold out or being resold with huge markups.

Here's some pic of the "bad" jar:

And here are some of my fastest-growing healthy jar:

Not sure what that black is, but the mycelium looks healthy to me!

The black stuff doesn't seem to be spreading as far as I can tell, while the mycelium definitely is. I feel like it really shouldn't be there, but then again as far as I know molds grow and spread at an accelerated rate so it should be noticeable. I guess I just have to leave it alone for a while and time will show what it is.

could it be a blob of spores that got ejected from the syringe? I was just looking at a spore syringe I made this morning and I had somehow managed to suck up a big cluster of spores about the same size.

I spawned to coco from a jar that looked like that and it’s working fine but my jar was much more colonized before that showed up

Now that you bring it up, that could be it. I might have not shaken the syringe up hard/long enough to fully break up the clump of spores before inoculating.

Could those black specks be spores that failed to germinate? Honestly if the jar gets to 100% you could probably just fruit it on its own. I would just keep it separate from the main grow if the black specks grow.
