@ Funky; holy shit you weren't lying, you almost did lop the tip right off!

c10h12n2o said: grain prep was definitely a problem (too wet).
did you do any control jars? did all the jars do that or just one? sterilization was also either ineffective or compromised afterwards. so either you didnt PC it properly, your jar seal/filter failed, or you got like 10+ kinds of contams in it while inoculating. what did you inoculate with, and how? (a2g? SAB? spores? g2g?)
That was like my third or fourth time doing grain. Got water to a boil, turned off heat, dumped oats in, let sit for 30-45 minutes, sterilized for 2 hours, vented properly. 5 jars out of 40 did that, and it wasn't until the myc was at ~50%, it was a sudden overnight change. Didn't look like anything growing on top of the grain, just that the grains all turned dark. Wedge inoculation, post shake. I have flipped lids and SFDs, RTV sealing them extremely well. Had to be a filter fail, but it's been a long time since it happened and hasn't happened since. Now i check my filters after every run to see if they are coming loose.

I’ve seen that before on really thick canopies. I think it’s pseudomonas getting a foothold as the colony starts to produce CO2 and heat at an increased rate.

Lesson learned...test before going big.

Same, those things are so fuckin nasty
Ok so i noticed a major fuckup this week

Fuckup: I like workin with lots of different grain types. Stupidly left opened bags of like 8 types in my growroom
Been noticing all these weird mothlike bugs in the house all summer. Figured it was just summer
Then i realized i see more in grow room than anywhere else. I saw a worm climbing up the wall so i knew the source had to be close
Cocoon things all over the walls, and mating moth things. So i checked my grain bags, and yhey were covered in the fuckers!!
So i just threw out about 200lb of grain :/
Such a dumb mistake... i totally knew better
Gonna use dedicated air tight containers for each grain type moving forward, rather than just random open bags

I've gone to great lengths trying to find decent quality grain, but I gave up long ago. The oats I can get is some shit from hell btw. I asked the guy at the feed store... he says the grain he gets is a mix of (the worst) grain from different farmers. My guess is it's just the leftover grain that nobody wants and they sell it for very cheap to the bunch of feed stores in my city.
Grain seems to get worse every passing year, must be the old shit from the bottom of the pile, old and dirty af. When I see people here saying the PC kills all endospores without exception, I think to myself "yeah try my shit and tell me, bitch".
Barley is the only grain I can use locally. Don't know what's up with it that it doesn't give me that much trouble and it's a tough grain that I like. Far from clean, but at least usable.

I've heard good things about Racehorse quality oats, as was mentioned, but I've found that SEED quality is the best for the money. You might have to buy more than 50#, but it's worth it. I found that it isnt as expensive as the Racehorse stuff, believe it or not. The way it was explained to me from a farmer was, they pull seed quality out first, then the food grade, then premium feed..then the rest goes to bulk feed, which is the dusty, dirty funky shit you find sometimes. Feed stores ususally have 'seed' quality available if you ask. If not, they're boshie, and find another shop.
Again, that's my experience. Mileage may vary.

I got seed grade millet, baking grade millet, baking grade rye, seed grade rye, 3 kinds of feed wheat, and racehorse oats
Bugs got in all of em :/ but i blame my handling, not the grain, they all work great (even with bugs in em haha)
