Hey guys!
I've been lurking and searching but can't find an answer; I'm sorry if I've overlooked it.
Over the last few months, I've tried a couple of mushroom kits and also grown four buckets of blue oyster mushrooms using paper cat litter, cardboard, and different/no pasteurization techniques. I've had surprisingly good luck.
For my latest project, I bought spore syringes for King Oyster and Brown Beech mushrooms, and I've inoculated/colonized 4 half-pint jars of brown rice for each species -- a quart apiece. The jars are beautifully white and ready to mix with substrate and go into some plastic shoeboxes I bought for indoor growing.
I bought a 20-pound bag of oak fuel pellets and a bag of gypsum, but I can't figure out the amount of dry fuel pellets I should soak for each species. The consensus here seems to be that the weight of the pellets and the water should be almost the same -- though a little less water is better -- but how much of the dry fuel pellets do you recommend per quart of spawn? Also -- how much gypsum?
(I plan to add boiling water to the pellets and let them soak in a cooler for several hours. I'll forego any nutritional supplements for this grow, so I can get a baseline of what yield is possible without them, and also to keep things clean and simple.)
I hate to moisten/waste more pellets than I can use with the limited spawn that I have on hand. And, again, I have tried to find this ratio both on this board and elsewhere, but I haven't been successful. Others might find it useful too.
Thanks very much!

Your best bet is to make sure you have 60% water content by using this...
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26632628
once you figure out the water content all you do next time is measure out your fuel pellets and water and you will know you have 60% water in your sub. The 1st time will take you longer but you will save that time on the future grows and you take one of the variables out if you have problems with colonization. You will know your water content is not the problem.

And also, don't bother with the gypsum. No one uses it anymore except to keep grain from sticking when making spawn. If you do your grain prep right you don't need it for that either.
