First time grower - Aerial mycelium growth in monotubs? (w/ pics)
    #26956913 - 09/27/20 12:40 AM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Hi everyone! This is my first time attempting to cultivate mushrooms and I am unsure if this mycelium growth is normal, or if something may be off with the environment inside and/or surrounding my monotubs.

For some background, I have colonized PE#6 using a popcorn tek which went well and I had no issues during the colonization stage within the jars. However, I did notice that the mycelium growth within my jars grew in fairly long, silk like strands which looked a bit different to pictures i've seen online:

The jars did fully colonize and I followed the bucket pasteurization method using approximately 750g of coco coir and 2.5-3.0 quarts of vermiculite. I mixed approx 1.5 quarts of spawn of spawn into each of the 25L Sterilite latching totes using BOD's unmodified monotub tek. I then added a thin casing layer 1 day after transferring my grains to these monotubs (I didnt pasteurize enough coir for a casing layer on day 1).

Here are my two totes after 5 days:

Monotub #1:

Monotub #2:

Here are a few close ups of the two mono's:

I have noticed that these tubs seem to be growing a lot of aerial mycelium(?) and as a new grower, i'm unsure if this could be an issue with my growing environment, or if this is even a problem at all.

On day 1, I placed the lid on the correct way without latching the tote shut. Once i added the casing layer, I flipped the lids on both totes so that they were upside down. Over the 5 days, I have only misted the totes 3 times (once a day on days 3, 4 and 5).

Also, these monotubs have been under a 9 watt LED (5000K) at a 12 hour on/off schedule since day 1 (they received indirect sunlight on a 12 on/12 off schedule during colonization within the jars as well).

My biggest concern is the amount of aerial mycelium that seems to be growing upward instead of growing throughout the substrate. I'm not sure if this could be something with the current growing conditions (such as FAE or humidity) or if this is completely normal. I have done a lot of browsing online regarding this topic but I can't seem to find a post where someone has a similar issue and if the issue was resolved.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Its the good kind of mycelium. In the jars and tubs. Stop misting and induce fresh air every four to six hours and light for fruiting

They do look healthy, it’s just rhizo myc.

If you’re running monos, or any tub really, you don’t need to fan or exchange air on a schedule. It should be dialed in to where it runs on it’s own.

Im sorry im by no means an expert but i chime in when i think i can.
So monotubs breathe on their own with poly filled holes and sgfc need fanning?
Ive been fanning the crap out of my monotubs...

lol yeah luckily fanning was determined to be unnecessary with pretty much everything. I run shoeboxes and underbeds which are just huge shoeboxes and they don’t even need holes like a mono. Just snap the lid on and wait for mushrooms.

You should go back and check the tek for your mono to start figuring out how to dial it in. I can’t imagine fanning every few hours I honestly think I would’ve grown a couple tubs and quit. I started with an older tek that said to fan shoeboxes but thankfully I ended up on here a few days in and realized I didn’t have to keep doing it.

Thanks for the info guys. I ended up offsetting the lids slightly on the two mono's last night to increase FAE and they seem to be doing really well.

Mono #1:

Mono #2:

I'm not entirely sure if offsetting the lids made much of a difference but I will record my results and use this information for the next grow.

At this point i think I will let these bins go as is with the lids flipped as per Bod's Unmod tek, i may offset the lids slightly if they look too moist but I think they look pretty good for the time being. If anyone has any additional feedback I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks!

Hey guys,

Just wanted to update you on the progress of these monos. One mono is doing extremely well while the other is a bit slower to fruit. Here are the pics of each.

Mono #1

Mono #2

I noticed that Mono #1 has a small crack in the upper right side and it looks like the bottom left and top right corners may be a bit on the dry side so im assuming im not misting enough? I generally only mist once a day with 4-6 sprays and the spray bottle is about 2-3 feet above the top of the casing so should i be misting more often?

Here are a few close up pics of the areas im talking about.

Thanks!
