Active Conocybe Sp. (Pholiotina Cyanopus) * 3
    #26956762 - 09/26/20 09:43 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Vancouver Island, BC

Found on a grassy path, in a grassy area right next to the edge of the forest. I'm suspecting them to be Conocybe Cyanopus or Conocybe Smithii.

Habitat:
grassy area at the edge of the forest

Gills:
orangish brown gills

Stem:
white, brittle, blue bruising at the base

Cap:
translucent striated margin, hygrophanous cap

Spore print color:
taking print.

Bruising:
bruising blue, heavily bruising on some specimens

Other information:
different from the smell of Psilocybe mushroom, but is very pleasant.

It's so crazy to see pics of bluing Conocybes after seeing regular dunce caps in so many atl lawns. Amazing find. I think cyanopus and smithii are now in Pholiotina, but could be wrong.

Cyanopus. Due to the lack of the “distinct pronounced umbo” of smithii, according to the SVIMS key.

Definitely an active Pholiotina species. Very cool finds! :super:

By the way, thanks OP for your nice photo collection of P. pelliculosa on MO. I've been trying to find the species here in Finland, since it was found in Norway last year. Gives some hope.

    #26971073 - 10/05/20 06:32 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Pholiotina cyanopus is hallucinogenic, containing psilocin, psilocybin, baeocystin, norbaeocystin and aeruginascin.[3] Paul Stamets stated in 1996 that fruit bodies of P. cyanopus have been found to contain anywhere from 0.33–1.01% (of dry weight) psilocybin, 0–0.007% psilocin, and 0.12–0.20% baeocystin.[6] A more recent study found a collection of P. cyanopus from Poland to contain 0.90±0.08% psilocybin, 0.17±0.01% psilocin, 0.16±0.01% baeocystin, 0.053±0.004% norbaeocystin and 0.011±0.0007% aeruginascin.[3] Most mycologists recommend against eating this mushroom because it is easy to mistake for deadly poisonous species e.g. pholiotina rugosa, cortinarius gentilis, galerina marginata or galerina padulosa

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pholiotina_cyanopus

Dosage:
40-50 small specimens, 1/3 of a fresh ounce and/or 1 dried gram.

Other Notes:
Also described as Conocybe cyanopus. A taxonomical choice has been chosen here to include this species and Ph. smithii in Pholiotina instead of Conocybe. The micro features on the pileus is what is called a hymenoderm pileipellis, which has been used to separate other species from the genus Conocybe to Pholiotina.
Pholiotina cyanopus can be a difficult species to identify for begginers as it can get confused with other LBM's quite easily.
Potently active, although petite in size. Beug and Bigwood (1982b) found 0.93 psilocybin but no psilocin. Christiansen et al. (1984) reported ranges of 0.33-0.55 psilocybin and 0.004-0.007 psilocin. Gartz (1992) found 0.78-1.01silocybin, no psilocin, and 0.12-0.20 baeocystin. This species is probably widely distributed across the temperate regions of the world but goes unnoticed because of its minute stature.

According to anecdotal "evidence" (i.e. someone here at Shroomery who ate them, I can't recall who, when or where)
they are potent somewhere in the same region as liberty caps. So the dosage suggested (1 gram) seems appropriate.

I have tried them like five times between 30 to 100+ specimen dosages. I don't have a scale at the moment, but they are quite potent. Around 60 gave me pretty decent ride. I have 300-350 collected this year and can't wait for the right moment.

I only found a few today sadly, but I decided to bio-assay a small specimen to see if any effects would be felt from such a small dose, I only found one with heavily blue staining and only ate that one to be safe. Hopefully this week they will start popping up again more frequently, and I will be able to bio-assay more fresh ones to get max potency, and I will make sure to weigh them to give an accurate dose to you guys.

I think there are at least two in the first collection, that are very likely a different species.

Quote:

https://files.shroomery.org/files/20-39/117648993-DSC_0144.jpg

The two that don’t seem to be bluing, in this picture. The stipe looks to be is a different color, even accounting for the bruising on the others.
They are also both clearly thicker, than any of the others, starting at the base, but especially as they approach the pileus, as they do not taper, from the bottom up, resulting in a noticeably more slender apex than base, in the manner of every single one of the specimens showing definite blue bruising, at least in this first collection.

I really wanted to make sure to get this posted before looking through & admiring all the other pictures from the later days, because I didn’t want to forget or become distracted, in the interim.

The caps also look different, but that could easily be attributable to moisture levels, but the one that doesn’t show any bruising where I can see the gills a bit, seems like the spacing is less distant, than any of the ones with blueing, even accounting for the cap not having expanded to the same extent, they look more closely spaced, but it’s not a great shot of the gills, I admit.

The last thing that I will mention for now, is that most of the definite active specimens have a bend or a little hook at the very base, it does look as if very base of the two in question (at least in my mind) may have not come up with them, but I have no way of knowing, for sure, if there was much if any stem remaining behind.

Awesome find by the way! Such a delicate beauty and elegance! In recent years, I have been more and more appreciative, of Lilliputian grace and splendid details to be found amongst the endless varieties of the “LBMs,” that so many people dismiss, just walking past without even a second glance!

Again thank you so much manOwar for those 2 key features, I will be looking for both those features next hunt and I'll get some good gill shots as well. This is a genus I'm still new with and I appreciate all the help Man weeding out all the deadly poisonous look a likes.

For sure! I appreciate the opportunity to spot subtleties like that, I am kinda out of practice, at least with online IDs, I can’t get into my old account and kinda lost motivation to spend much time here when I did. When you go from being a TI to starting back at a post count of 0 it can be a bit discouraging. But really as far as life’s setbacks go, that’s pretty minor!

Is it possible to tell apart Pholiotina cyanopus and Pholiotina smithii macroscopically?
Or can these species not be told apart by naked eye?

Interesting finds! Was hoping to see someone post a pholiotina find..

I've tried comparing it to a couple specimens I found about a month ago. Look identical to my untrained eye, save for the bluing. I neglected to pick at the base which may or may not have an effect? I was trying to ID this and determine look alike but cannot find much info.

Found in grass near woodline as well. Pics below. What do you think?

Pholiotina Smithii is another mushroom in the Pholiotina genus that bruises blue, contains psilocybin, and grows in the same areas as well as in bogs, ditches and swampy areas, commonly in sphagnum moss. They are also found along river banks and in lawns
scattered to numerous in mossin the late Spring, Summer, and perhaps early Fall, Looks a lot like Pholiotina smithii but differs microscopically in spore size and cystidia.

They are the same, the names are synonymous.

Are you telling me that Pholiotina cyanopus and Pholiotina smithii are the same species Doc?

Are cyanopus and smithii separate species? Or are they synonyms?

No, I believe that I misread or misunderstood what I was reading when I first saw this, my apologies.  I believe I was thinking about Conocybe smithii and Pholiotina smithii being synonymous. Now I read it again I don't know what I was talking about.

I shouldn't be responding to anything right now to be honest,  my mind definitely isn't where it should be. Don't mind me, my gears are grinding causing massive brain farts.
