Police getting called after mushroom hunting?
    #26955692 - 09/26/20 07:47 AM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Hey there. I live in a very fruitful area where liberty caps grow pretty much on top of each other. Obviously I'm quite lucky, however, this also led to quite a few people getting caught in the past - there are old articles about it in the local newspapers itc. This was a few years ago, but I'm afraid to go hunting anywhere, because I feel like someone might just call the police on me. I'm not a shady person, actually probably the last person you'd except taking psychodelics from, but very paranoid. I assume not many here have ever had any experience with the police, but can anyone give me some assurance? I don't think getting caught with possesion would be very good...  I'm in the UK

You can go somewhere that is private. You can bring a dog so you dont look as sketch. Not sure the laws there but here in US it is the same as crack possession, very serious. I've had cops roll up on me when picking in the city before it can be nerve racking. I also had them watching me from the bushes when I was picking a spot near the police station. Just have a story ready and be confident, if they ask you you could say you are:
-geocaching
-picking up litter
-harvesting edible mushrooms
-foraging plants

I've used all these excuses at one point or another. Definitely had many run ins with nosey strangers. I dont pick in populated areas any more for this reason. So many stories about encounters with strangers lol I could go all day. Here mushroom hunting is not a common thing so they dont really understand what's going on and are more like WTF

Also you can say that you lost your drone a couple of days ago; studying different insect habits for a paper.  Lol.  Or you can just say that you love to walk and look around at the environment and to leave you alone!  Just be believable and you should be ok.

I'm uk based, been hunting for 20+ years.

I used to be afraid of being "caught" or questioned by the law and public when picking, over time you realise most people aren't interested in what you are doing, as long as you are not trespassing or damaging the area/landscape.

A few tips
- use a lidded cup/sports bottle to store your finds in, occasionally make it look like you are drinking from it.

  - pick in open spaces with a good view of the horizon, if you see the ol' bill approaching you can dump/eat your finds before they arrive at your location.

  - dress appropriately, make your appearance that of a walker/ rambler, no tie dye!

  - if you have a dog, take it with you. Nothing suspicious about walking a dog in a meadow. Can also put your finds in a dogshit bag and not look suspicious bending over and picking stuff up repeatedly.

These days I'm comfortable enough to pick from village greens, city parks/greenspaces etc without worry of being questioned, and if I was I would be happy to explain that I am foraging for mushrooms and just unsure of what I have picked. Admittedly that will only work if I had a few different species and no more than say 15-20 specimens of each species.

Good luck, stay alert, dont look overly suspicious and have fun.

Some great tips there, just don't get caught with em... Have a good veiw of the horizon and make sure no one can sneak up on you.
The police will be undercover this time of year and usually they target the popular spots.
Always be ready to throw them away, if you have a large ammount might not be good idea to eat them all. It will look suspicious that there's a pile of neatly collected magic mushrooms next to you but that won't hold up in court I don't think... Gotta be caught with possession of them.

In Estonia there is 1 very good spot. Well known to police. I go there at night. Nighthunt is very cool too. But seeing glowing eyes makes my hearth race pretty fast.

Thanks so much for your tips! I do have a dog that always gets attention from strangers on our walks, but the poopbag idea is truly genius. Your responses gave me confidence.

A camera may still be good camouflage to make it look like you are just taking pictures of mushrooms.

It might also be worth it to purchase some similar looking mushrooms from the store and mix your finds with the legit mushrooms. If you can find edibles in the same habitat even better. Chances are if you are searched at all, the police officer isn't going to be an experiences mycologist and having a mixed bag gives you plausible deniability.

Put the mushrooms in a trash bag, and then ACTUALLY pick up trash as you collect mushrooms. Put the trash on top of the mushrooms in the bag so that it looks like just a bag of trash, and you're just picking up the neighborhood

I believe fresh mushroom are totally legal in the UK. It only becomes a drug when processed (ie drying).

Pretty sure psilocybin mushrooms are a class A drug in the UK

Nope, the law changed in 2005. Anything containing psilocin or psilocybin is illegal in the uk. Class a.

This got me thinking and came up with couple ideas I'll be trying this year just to feel safer.
1.staple or sow a plastic food/sandwich bag to the inside of pair of trousers and above the crotch, hidden storage and the least likely place a officer would touch during a patdown/search.
2.empty and clean the insides of a packet of nuts/dried fruit apply transparent double-sided sticky tape on the lip inside on one side, hidden storage it can be filled with mushrooms and then sealed shut to look like an unopened packet of dehydrated hiking food along side other similar foods for hiking/walking. I doubt anyone would open all the food in my bag during a search.

Also pick some other species of mushrooms that aren't illegal so if one ever does get stoped it will look like that's all you've collected, just some edible or random mushrooms.

How often do people get arrested picking?

There is that one well know case where the guy was picking azurescens at the WA OR boarder, and I have a fiend that got a real hefty ticket (i think it was $300-$400) for picking porcini in Fort Bragg CA. Do people often have run in's with the po's?

On the west coast and down near Florida cops know what's up. You could get busted or worse shot. North east is pretty safe tho. Almost impossible to conceal them when I'm filling up bookbag so I try to park very far away that way if I have to dip I got a decent chance of getting away safely and my vehicle ain't linked to me. Morels grow in the same habitat so I will fill a bag of them incase someone started asking me questions, and it has happened a few times. Did alot of very sketchy picking in highly public areas when I was a new hunter but it's just not worth it so me now that I have hundreds of safe spots I could go. My advice is if you dont feel 100% safe then dont take the risk its not worth it for some mushrooms.

Well it is illegal, so there is always a risk. Get the permission of the owner, especially if there is a house on the property. Will reduce the chances someone will call the police. If the cops are called on you, you have three options as I see it;
1. Tell them the truth, you're picking all types of mushrooms for fun. Just make sure you're picking every type of mushroom you find and putting them in a separate bag in case the officer wants to see.
2. Put them in a coffee cup as you're picking them, and pop a lid on it if you see a cop car. Lie to the police if they ask you if you're picking mushrooms while taking a few fake sips.
3. Stay near a wooded area and just walk into the woods if you see a cop car, and lay your harvest down somewhere and come back for it later.

First option is probably the smartest.

In order to improve and reach your goal, you first must learn when to blame yourself before pointing the finger at others.
