I don't get it?
I love Australia like no other country on this planet, so to say I was a little disappointed by the content of this thread would be an understatement.
-------------------- Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not. --Jac O'keeffe

I think I love Australia more than you.
Anyway you should look him up. He's pretty amazing.
Although, I do not expect you to get his music.
No insult there.

I love Australia. It's my home and my world. The rest of the world thinks it's all about beaches and desserts, but the reality it's about freedom, security and ease of living. It's a way of life.
I've lived in many countries, and with the exception of Switzerland, never have I come across a place that has it so good.
Probably the only place you call people you hate mate and people you like cunt. Love the irony.

While I do love the Australian landscape and select communities I feel that we still have a long way to go as a nation before our society and "culture" is worthy of love.
We are a very complacent nation, a little too happy to say "she'll be right mate" when it comes to a lot of important issues. Most Aussies won't even write a letter to their local member of parliament to enact positive change, let alone protest or riot, regardless the cause. We have grown fat and lazy, living in these nanny states.
Our political landscape is an absolute shit show because the government is quite corrupt, basically owned and driven by large corporations intent on stripping the country of all natural resources.
Our history is based on racial oppression and attempted genocide. Aboriginal people were treated as animals, regulated under the flora and fauna act until 1965. They were dispossessed of land, hunted, raped and used as slaves and we still deny them self determination and many land rights. Their culture, language and beliefs were denigrated, ridiculed and almost completely lost.
There was the "White Australia policy" that was in effect until 1973 whereby immigration was determined directly by the colour of your skin and country of origin. This created a very insular society and the effects are still seen today (Joh Bjelke-peterson, Pauline Hanson, the National Party). Even our current Prime Minister got his start in politics by vilifying muslims and capitalising on the refugee crisis.
Our environmental policies are a joke, our government denies climate change and refuses to adhere to international climate and pollution targets.
Social welfare recipients do not get enough money to live on and yet are blamed for draining the economy. Mental health, drug rehabilitation and domestic violence support services are also drastically underfunded yet share in similar blame.
But yeah, it's a great country if you're white and middle class.

I feel as though you're focusing too much on the negatives.
I agree that the political climate isn't the greatest at the moment. But to be honest I think all forms of politics has an element of deceit behind it. That's what almost all politicians are; professional lairs who serve their interests before the people. The more charismatic the lair the more successful the politician. And yeah we still have a lot of work ahead of us in terms of becoming a more progressive/socially secure society.
While I disagree that protesting or rioting Are a viable way to to bring on positive reform. There are certainly people out there who care about these issues and write those letters or start their petitions. Unfortunately most of that falls back to those politicians who ultimately won't budge unless its in line with their agendas or if their public approval rating depends on it.
Ultimately though we do have it very good here compared to many places in the developed world. and I find that almost every place out of the of the big cities have an awesome sense of community spirit and an abundance of genuine folk who are more than happy to lend a helping hand to someone in need. That's not to say that there aren't people like that within those cities.
I understand that you're currently residing in Melbourne. Its tough at the moment, I haven't seen any of my family or friends who live there for over a month now. Some of them several months longer than that. The despondency really is starting to take a hold on a few of them. It got a hold of me early so I fled the city after the first few weeks of the stage 4 restrictions. I still find the isolation tough even without all those strict restrictions in regional Victoria.
You're a fellow Shroomerite who lives in the same state as me. So as far as I'm concerned we are bros. I sympathize with what you're going through right now. Please feel free to me if you just want to vent or something. There's no need to go through this alone.
~
To stay on topic; Why I love Australia, are for a lot of the same reasons as Northerner already mentioned. As well as as all the unique landscapes, much of which i'm still yet to visit, the flora and fauna. Oh and the shroom seasons in the southern states are kickass!

Welfare is like 2% of Aus budget or something redix compared to other shit. I agree with lots of what you say but i gotta stress not to think too much, unless you gonna run for seat on your local council and actually do something about it, it's just gonna suck the life out of you.
I have a mate irl thats a bit like you sound, he's real passionate about australian politics and getsall worked up when he reads/sees/hears stuff in the media about wastage etc. It's a double edged sword being cognizant of your governments failings.
Ignorance is bliss dude, its so true, just think of how happy kids are generally. THEY DONT KNOW SHIT HAHA!
When a plane is going to crash they tell you to put the oxy mask on yourself first, before trying to help anyone else, you're no good to anyone unconscious. Same irl.
I can tell you're a smart dude, just gotta get through your lockdown and recalibrate.
You'll be right cunt.

Musically... I view the world. So like, I have two favorite guitarists.... Both virtuoso and awesome. I kinda love them equally but when I want to hear something truly bright, truly beautiful I to go to Tommy...

From what Ive seen Austrailia has even less guns and higher taxes and more regulations on tobacco than Canada which im already not too pleased with in those areas, I feel no need to look any further, austrailia is not the place for me.
And its really hot, has big spiders and they kill cats! no thanks! (I understand that they have to kill the cats to save the environment but they're cats you know? Pretty sad.)
Loved Steve Irwin though. one of the greats, truly. Rest in peace.

You don't want to live in a place with less guns?

Race is really stupid but there's a concentrated effort to make hell for the white middle class in Australia. It's a little squeamish though. It's "the Left" and I still don't know what their aim is.
The stuff said about corrupt government - I've had contact with the less visible aspects of government because of a national security tip off and they are extremely capable and robust. I mean, they are hunting down the extremely smart graduates. These are exceptional people.
Government is massive. Also in America. Television and welfare cheque government isn't it! (not having a go)

I like Australia, they had a problem with invasive European rabbits, so the built a fence to contain them...which failed for obvious reasons. Then they got a brilliant idea, why not introduce myxoma virus into the population which causes myxomatosis. Clinical presentation of this virus is Days after infection Clinical signs 2-4 Swelling at site of infection 4 Fever 6 Swelling of eyelids, face, base of ears, and anogenital area 6 Secondary skin lesions, including red pinpoint lesions on eyelids and raised masses on body 6-8 Clear ocular and nasal discharge that becomes mucopurulent and crusting 7-8 Respiratory distress 8-9 Hypothermia 10 Complete closure of eyelids due to swelling 10-12 Death
Despite being a virus naive population and being severely reduced in number, they have adapted are at pre-virus levels currently.
Wonder if they are gonna take similar drastic measures against the cane toads invasive species.
