no you don't need to,
but it's a good idea b/c straw draws a LOT of water

even just straight verm is better than nothing.musesicksic is right it draws crazy amounts of water. It really should be cased.

Butternut squash are softer than acorn or other types of squash, which makes them easier to cut and prepare.

you can expect at least 2 good flushes from cased straw. remember, the 1st flush is the most important, because it will have the greatest yield. naturally, any subsequent flushes will always yield less than the first flush. so you should case straw, because casing significantly affects yields.

Everyone is absolutely right about the casing layer and a larger yield from water sucking straw. It goes without saying that these guys know what they are talkin about!

I would just like to add that they neglected to mention the fact that a properly sterilized casing layer, when applied to colonized straw, can signifigantly reduce your chances of contamination. IMHO straw has a tendancy to contam a little easier than other substrates after the first flush and this is probably why people falsly characterize staw as a "one flush" substrate. The casing can and will increase your odds of getting a second flush ,without contamination, greatly.
