Spawned a overgrown bacterial jar to a shoebox to see what would happen and hopefully get a few fruits. Got these weird dense things instead. Any idea as to what they are?

Yeasty subs smell so distinctive

You know, it might even help, like sockadin pointed out. I know fermented woodchips colonize much faster. Axenic cultures arent exactly natural anyways, but the benefits of fermentation could very well be the product of the ways the substrate is broken down and changed rather than the presence of other organisms directly.

Im gonna test some sterilized fermented woodchips vs unsterilized fermented chips. Thanks for bringin this up sock!

I think this is gonna be a great test. I know Edmunter did some cool stuff with Fermented wood chips and wood overs. If you think about it, your letting the yeast break down the bran outer layer of the grain. What we want is the groat layer for the nutrients. In my anecdotal opinion the idea about fermenting grains for cube spawn is letting the yeast break down the insoluble bran layer and exposing the oat groats of the kernel.  In either case with Oats or other grains I do think that it needs to be sterilized after the fermentation run.

I have no idea if it works, but I guess I need to get a clone culture so I can run a side by side and see what the results are.

Opened this print last night.

Next prints from the same batch were fine.  No idea what I did to this one.

Looks like that one was still wet when you folded it. It’s likely full of bacteria. If you have other prints to work with I would just toss that one.

So it's been awhile since I've been on but im back and have a scary story.

I'm sure everyone's seen this right? (not me haha)

Was almost me a few nights ago.

Had just finished a 3 1/2 hours run on some bags and went to turn the flame off and instead of turning it all the way off (all the way left) I turned it just before it was off to the highest flame and went downstairs.

About 20 minutes later I hear this extremely loud high pitched squealing and run upstairs to see water spewing all over the kitchen and the PC just looking like a garden hose. I turned the flame off and the light on and there was like 2 inches of water in my stove area and the floor was drenched.

Safe to say, I dodged a bullet. Had I fallen asleep (was about to lol) Would have been really bad.

It was definitely a scare, I have a pretty nice stove and a custom overhead for it, would have sucked to have to buy a new one :facepalm3:

Thankfully the only thing that got fucked up was my sealing ring on the presto 23qt, I found out after making more bags the next day and it was leaking water out the side. Only 10 bucks to replace. Ended up only popping half the bags though so not to bad. Still a semi success lol

Things started looking funky so removed the tub to the garage. Pretty dry in there I guess.

Didn't pasteurize my dung at the right temperature my previous run, tried to guess the temp based on past experience but a new stove meant i totally misjudged the heat. Candy thermometer used att all times now.

The tub colonized well but stalled prior to fruiting, noticed some primordia appear which turned out to be inky caps.
Grew a nice tub of small inky caps which sporulated as well.

Edit - figured out it was the manure not leeching properly which allowed Coprinus to grow.

I usually do 3.5 hours on bags to make sure the middle gets properly sterilized. Jars I only do 1 1/2 - 2 hours but bags i'd rather be safe than sorry. I had 6 bags shoved in there and you can get away with 3 hours but any less than that is asking for trouble I feel like.

Drying a spore print is pretty simple, but what's the best way to let a spore swab dry after swabbing?

I tried finding an answer but came up as dry as I want my swabs.
Just been sticking them back in the sterile pouch and taping it up for the time being....

I’ve only made a few but I’ve been letting them sit in front of the hood or under a tub for like 8-16 hours then putting them back in the sleeve.
