try sandpapering near the holes to rough them up a bit and give the silicone something to grab, doesn't look like you did in the pic. We were discussing plastic lids over in the LAGM thread if you wanna get something different/cheaper than the ball ones

I have a bunch of the cheap white ones that work great. Wanted to give these a whirl since everyone loves them. They are the self adhesive sfd’s I’ll have to rtv them onto these apparently.

That's a mess. I exploded agar all over the kitchen once. I guarantee that was more difficult to clean up than the mess you have there.

Damn mushie, I laughed pretty hard at that I can’t lie, but damn that sucks!
I found a colonized jar of Melmak in the garage. It was around 4 months old. Decided to spawn it. Very bacterial. Stress side pinned before fully colonizing. Tried to save it but ended up tossing it. The fruits were nasty as they tried to mature.

Duuuude yes, verm specks all over the floors and cabinets.
Yeah it took a few hours to vacuum all of the coir, wipe the cabinets, scrub the floor, mop... definitely fucked my day.
It's all good Tammie, you can laugh at my pain that's the point of this thread.

Omfg, I forgot a bucket of grain soaking all week. Went to dump it down the drain 🤮 I haven’t smelled anything that rancid in a long freaking time. Wife ran out the kitchen wretching. I was dry heaving. Holy cow that was bad. I put the lid back on the bucket and threw the whole thing out! Smelled like rancid fermented cabbage farts.

Not yeasty, rancid. It was bubbling and brown foamy. Mix of wheat and millet. I’ve smelled beer that went south brewing. This was just gross. Think I started soaking sunday. But brings me back to the experiment I wanted to run. Was going to soak over night then collect a few cc of water and throw on the scope and check bacteria levels. Then pressure cook and measure again after a few days.

Well shoot,I got everything together and and no vermiculite. Thought I bought it. Now do use patience or the perlite instead. Looked everywhere, even in the car trunk. Old man brain fart! It's for brf tubs and APE. MC Merdin style...

Go get that bucket and rinse that grain! I bet it would end up being one of the fastest colonizing spawn you ever had. I got to get back to fermenting my oats.
Also I am gonna put this here cause I have a bad feeling about this one. Could be Blue OysterX RW but I think its mold.

So I did a qt of a pea+ F2 pheno clone (did a josex poke of inner stem tissue) and after I shook the jar, what I think was yeast (little white/yellow spots) started growing on the uncolonized grain. I didn’t have time to deal with it at the time so I left it sit for a day and then noticed that it didn’t slow the myc down from colonizing the jar.. just ran right over it. So it fully colonized and I decided to try and top fruit it.

Anyone have experience with doing that? Obviously this is just an experiment to see if it fruits and I’ve already written it off but it’s be cool if I could get something to clone again with my normal cloning method

I’ve spawned some gnarly yeast jars with zero problems. On grain the myc acted like it wasn’t even there.

Four days later

Don’t have pics of the tub but it grew these

Same, yeast alone has never been a problem ime, myc eats right through it. But ofc if theres yeast there could be other contams as well
Yeasty subs smell so distinctive
You know, it might even help, like sockadin pointed out. I know fermented woodchips colonize much faster. Axenic cultures arent exactly natural anyways, but the benefits of fermentation could very well be the product of the ways the substrate is broken down and changed rather than the presence of other organisms directly.
Im gonna test some sterilized fermented woodchips vs unsterilized fermented chips. Thanks for bringin this up sock!
