Lmao, my stupid dogs thought it was Halloween again... yummy little snacks rolling all over the place.
Trying to be productive and do two grain runs today. Last two had a shit ton of burst grains so today I only soaked a few hours, brought to a boil and strained let dry for an hour. Even pat dry, turned out much better... I need to write that down in a journal cause I’ll forget

Nice, I can contribute. Anyone else forget to shake their syringes?
Heres two jars going on day 11 and this is the only growth on either. It kind of looks like the myc just colonized a single grain.

I'm new at this and not really sure if it's ok, but I have a third jar which is doing better. Also lost another one of the same batch to trich.

It was 2ccs of b+ from some reddit vendor. I couldn't see clusters of spores in it either, but I know that doesn't mean everything.

Much better, I like a little dryer cause I’m heavy handed with the LC. Can still chop in half with a fingernail though. unless in two weeks you hear me complaining about stalled jars... 🤣

If you do your rinse after you've boiled them then you can rinse all the starches off then jar and PC, this way it won't clump and remains easy to break up with a shake.

rinse after boil? wouldnt that leave em really wet? i prep my grains drier these days than i used to, seems to move faster (bod said he noticed the same thing)
seems easier to just prep them perfect the first time than try to salvage bad prep (especially for masters). ofc i say "bad" in a sense of less than my OCD perfectionist standard, not "bad" as in wont work

I let the hot tap run so it's scalding and rinse with that. Still evaps off pretty quickly once laid out.

This was an ongoing, hair-pulling failure.
My first few runs of MS syringe to grain went pretty well using these ugly but effective lids made with hi-temp silicone and polyfill.

I used all of those in a failed attempt to make lion's mane plug spawn. I figured since I was moving on to G2G, I didn't need lids that were so labor intensive. I started to just knock a couple holes in them and covering with 2 layers of micropore tape. My contamination rate grew to about 95%, but I didn't make the connection, which seems stupid AF in retrospect. I thought it was because my house was too moldy or I wasn't doing my grain transfers correctly.

It was only when I started doing some agar work with very little contamination that I figured it out. I made some new lids with Ball leakproof lids and tyvek... problem solved! Also I realized I shouldn't fondle the grain jars every day. Now I just gaze at them lovingly from a distance.

I slightly undercook them and rinse with cold water, drain/shake most of the excessive water out and then load them still pretty wet. They finish cooking in the PC as they sterilize and absorb any remaining water and you don't have to let them dry a bunch before loading the jars. I used to fully cook them, rinse, then dry overnight but would still get clumping and bursts. Also got sick of leaving a bunch of grain around to dry. New way I'm done in 3 hours including a 2 hour PC cycle.

Had two tubs trich out mid 2nd flush recently, few weeks apart. I removed them as soon as I noticed, but one of them grew to nearly a third of the tub before I spotted it.
Having had this happen, do I have to deep clean the room or can I just continue doing my thing?
I made sure to remove and trash the trich'd sub in a different room and thoroughly washed the tubs and lids with soapy water but that's about it.
I'd normally just go to search for this but a lot of the info is old or conflicting, with RR saying he's grown for years in a moldy room but also saying in another post that a trich outbreak could ruin grows in a room for a long time.
Any thoughts?

My fuckup was thinking this was going to pin anything. IDK if it's dirty or just a mutant blob of a culture but it just colonized jars and bins like a monster but just never pinned, turned green after ~14 days.

I guess just never work with anything tomentose.

Tomentose or rhizo has nothing to do with it, the spawn was off.
Amazonian was the quickest type I’ve grown so far too, I usually see pins around two weeks and it pinned on day 9.

Those plates are fine, if there's a fuckup (there isn't) that would be your way of cutting the wedge, it's too irregular so myc doesn't grow in an uniform way.

Yeah.. I shoulda been better about keeping it dry.. I sealed the bag back up.. which wasn’t a problem before but I’m in a pretty wet part of the world so I just went and got a new bag and it’s all good. I poked a bunch of needle holes in the new bag and I’m leaving the top open.. should be good..

Definitely a good lesson that you should probably pasteurize your jiffy mix

that stuff is a crapshot, I once had a bag come with fully grown mushrooms in it. I believe they were Leucocoprinus birnbaumii from some googling. Couldn't find any stories of them growing sealed in a bag though.
