Fairport/Perinton NY finds, mostly in woods
    #26952469 - 09/24/20 10:16 AM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Habitat:
On a stick next to a log along a path by various vegetation such as brambles and the like.  Perinton/fairport NY.

Gills:
A darkish brownish greyish color when young, definitely more grey when older, black when dry.  Gills do not appear to attach to the stem.

Stem:
3-5cm in length, 2ish mm in diameter, whitish blue but some also looked reddish?, somewhat stranded texture, hollow I believe, snap somewhat easily.

Cap:
Diameter, color, texture, conical/spherical, convex/concave, etc.
ranging from 1-2.5ish cm in diameter, mostly tan with brownish black edges as they mature, conical, shaped like an umbrella but with the edges rolling up slightly as the mature.

Spore print color:
included in pictures and dark.  I'm not good with dark colors, but it looks mostly black to me.

Bruising:
I'm terrible at recognizing the colors of the bruises on any mushies.

Other information:
Smells a lot like what the mushrooms my local mushroom guy would give me (active ones), but I also don't know what variety those are.  The picture is of the last one I left in the spot I found them.  There was a clump of about 9ish caps when I originally found them, but left a small one or two just in case I needed to get a picture later.  I put 4 caps that have been dried out into a cup of warm water with lemon juice which was probably not the brightest, but I'm not feeling any side effects other than very light trippy feels... but that could be the coffee.

So the tea wont kill me or do anything?  That's my main concern.  It was a dumb idea that started with "my friends all seem to be dead, so this will either be fun or we'll be hanging soon."

I really wish I could find something active... it seems nearly impossible in this area.  I've found so many different mushrooms of all shapes and sizes, yet none seem to be active.  It would be really nice if a spore print found its way into my mailbox without circle or square incentives being involved.

At least the hunting is giving me something fun to do.

The tea will do nothing except make you slightly less thirsty.

To find actives, start your research here:  https://www.shroomery.org/8461/Which-psilocybin-mushrooms-grow-wild-in-my-area

I've done that already and done my best to go out after rains.  Unfortunately this area has had verrrry little rain this year.  I'm not sure what's up with that, but hopefully someone tells whoever is in charge during one of their next journeys to see such people in the psychedelic realms.

If anyone happens upon this thread and happens to live in this area, I would be very happy to keep pretty much anyone company and extract some laughs if they help me find the best places to look for such specimens.  I intend to find ways to make them much more prevalent every where my person happens to be.

I hear you saying you're eager to shortcut to the payoff, but there's really no substitute for expertise gained through study and trail time. The good news is that the fall season has barely started yet for actives in temperate climates.  Curiosity and perseverance pay off eventually.

I'm an avid walker.  I walk roughly 5-15 miles per day all over woods and various terrain along the canal paths and other river ways.  I've been doing this at least 2-3 times a week for over a year and a half now to cope with losing quite a bit of friends and family.  I have yet to find a single psychoactive mushie.

I've found jack o lanterns, fairy blood helmets, fairy helmets, shrimp of the woods or aborted entoloma's, chicken of the woods, an insane amount of various small brown mushrooms, quite a few microscopic orangeish red translucenty looking ones, tons of turkey tail and possibly false turkey tail, field mushrooms, mica caps, cauliflower mushroom (the jiggly white ones that look like blouse ruffles), bear or lions mane, coral mushrooms, tons of ink cap mushrooms that I can't recall the name of some shaggy some not, tons of various puff ball mushrooms and many others I could not identify nor take good pictures of due to only having the selfie camera working now on my old lgv20.

I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong or why the active ones seem to be hiding from me, but I'm starting to fear I'm the tithe to hell this time around.  I am pleased to announce it just rained.

Maybe I just need to slither around closer to the ground and try not to uncover bee's nests in the process?  I'm not sure what else to do at this point other than walk closer to the ground.

I'm sorry to hear you're having a rough time in your life.

What species are you looking for? Start there. Study pictures of it. A lot of them. Study its habitat and what triggers fruiting. Build a list of likely places and keep returning to them. Some of my active spots only fruit for a few weeks out of the year, and I've searched dozens of places where they *could* grow but they don't.

I belong to a couple Facebook groups for mushroom IDs in my area. That's a good way to get an idea of what's common around you. You can also infer habitat clues from photos and questions.

It's also true that actives are more common in some areas of the country than others. I would guess that you should be looking for Gymnopilus luteus and luteofolius, but I don't know your area. Another option is growing mushrooms. You can order spores and equipment legally.

It sounds like you’re laying a good foundation for yourself by covering so much ground and learning the area, it may be frustrating now but once you figure out what to look for and when you’ll have good idea of where to find all of the different habitats. My suggestion would be to attempt to  narrow it down a bit and try to target specific species and the habitat they prefer after some rain. What I did that I found helpful was to first make a list of active found in the area, I then looked each one up and added little notes like time of year found and temp/habitat preferred along with a reference photo.

Your best bet now would probably be the several different Gymnopilus Sp. (found on dead and decaying wood), Pluteus Sp. such as Americanus (on rotting wood by streams and such) and possibly Psilocybe Caerulipes https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26154772

Come spring time I would be searching for Ovoideocystidiata
https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26520758
And Panaeolous Cinctulus (in well fertilize lawn‘s and especially on and around horse poop).

Keep at it and I am sure they will find you!

👁️ 🌊 why you are empty.

Hunt for the habitat not the mushroom.

Growing is what I'm trying to get into.  I'm considering trying to grow a bin of some of the edible one's I've found such as the field mushrooms or aborted entoloma's.  I'd really like to find a local active species that I enjoy so when I do learn to grow, I can start to make patches every where I walk and see what sticks.

The biggest issue has been finances (a word I loathe).  I used to do software work in finance and big data and I'm very pleased to not be anywhere near the stuff or ever touch currency.  I must be really good at magic or something, because bills seem to disappear a lot and somehow I have an entire house to myself without knowing how that works.

I've looked over pictures of common species in this area quite a bit and it must just be laziness interacting with the humans on this rock and reading more.  I find a lot of mushrooms, I just have no clue which they are and get very frustrated with my lack of ability to take decent pictures without myself in them due to the camera issue with my phone.

The greater rochester ny area seems to be extremely paranoid about anything that the general dumb dumbs consider illegal without research.  Saying mushroom outside in public gets lots of looks and sometimes police.  It's reallllllly messed up.

Well if you’ve found and Identified several mushrooms, you are on your way, and you just need to keep it up, or post your finds. A low end smart phone camera can take damn good pictures of mushrooms with a little practice.
I am actually concerned that you may be here trolling because most people hearing the word “mushrooms,” in public places and/or square company will assume that’s one of the toppings you ordered on your dominos deep dish, square people don’t think “evil scary drugs,” when they here the word “mushrooms,” because in there world, mushrooms are an item on the salad bar not something to alter there consciousness.
People who here mushrooms and think Psychedelics won’t have a problem with a responsible adult deciding to partake, because they exist within the range of the cultural strata that does not disapprove of that type of activity.
Most likely you are projecting your paranoia onto your surroundings.
Anyone who hears you use the term “mushrooms,” and assumes illegal or nefarious activities are afoot, must have been given  plenty of reasons to suspect you are involved in shady practices. If the cops show up at the mere mention of mushrooms from your mouth they must have quite a history with you, because police do not waste their time and resources investigating produce departments or even conversations that discuss clearly  illegal substances such as cocaine in an abstract fashion.
I don’t even know where to start with your not using currency and your bills just poof disappear talk, other than that sounds like you actually might well be involved in some shady shit.
Or maybe you’re a young kid? Or have some sort of mental health issues?

I don’t know why I bothered to respond, but since I already typed all that I should probably at least say this most important thing:

I suspect that, for one reason or another, you might not be in the right place in life to ingest any type of powerful psychoactive substance.

Too late on the ingesting powerful substances.  I've definitely spilled more than one vial of acid on myself on "accident" before.  It's a pretty crazy experience to not be able to see your own hands in front of your face, but lots of faces and dripping kaleidoscopes.

I'm in my mid 30's, had a top secret, can't stand government or people of any sort of tyrannical authority, even those in 'heaven'.

I've had many a run in with the dumb dumbs with guns.  Even the federal ones, luckily I still had the clearance at that point.

I'm going to go ahead and keep looking.  Also, it's not paranoia, I'm pretty comfortable talking about any taboo subject while wandering down the sidewalk, Rochester NY is a special kind of hell within the NY hell home.
