To hell with petri dishes

I've been using little 4oz plastic serving cups for months. I decided I was going to be a "big boy" and invest in petri dishes for my agar. I liked how it was a little easier to do transfers being that they are a lower profile but that's it. Between fumbling with the lids and then having to wrap them with film. JESUS what a process. I did 25 dishes in the time it take me to do 50 of my smaller serving cups. Now I 'm stuck with a crap ton of petris.

Wrapping seemed like a nightmare at first for me too.
I chopped the Cling wrap roll into 1 inch pieces, and with some practice it goes really quickly now.
If I’m wrapping a whole sleeve, sometimes I’ll use a regular roll to wrap up the whole stack in one.

I really enjoy petri dishes but I've never tried anything else. Never will either. Wrapping them gets easier as time goes on. I was cursing up a storm the first time I used parafilm, now I love it.

I prefer petri dishes but I've switched to cups exclusively. I constantly found myself having not ordered more and I would end up using cups anyways.
Plus doing the monthly toss of old petris into the trash always made my heart sink a little...

I love petris, Hate parafilm and Love glad cling wrap.
Op. What kind of plastic sauce cups are you using and how are you sterilizing them?
Wrapping plates becomes really really easy with a little practice.

That's interesting cause in the long run petri dishes save me time and give me better visibility. So I love them compared to most no pours

I don't sterilize. I just buy them off amazon. I open them in my SAB and what I don't use I just wrap back up. If I feel they may be contaminated I rub them down with alcohol. I haven't noticed any contams in my agar doing it that way.

They are expensive. Thats what I don't like either. I poured 25 3 days ago and 4 had contams in them.

Then you fucked up your process.
So, you're telling me that you pour agar into these little plastic cups without sterilizing and don't see a lot of contams? Do they come wrapped and you treat cautiously until in a sab and unwrap?

I see all kinds of people doing this with sauce cups now. Even people with major cult operations. I don't get it. I would use petris again if it wasn't 100% free for me to rotate dozens of 4oz prepours at a time. Wrapping totally, totally gets easier though. I don't miss petris, but never found that to be a problem. I run a dozen varieties of cubes and exotics and prepours meet all my needs sustainably, but I'll never understand how people get by with those sauce cups. I see it over and over and over.

I’ve tried a few different no pours and hated them. I guess it’s what you’re used to. Petris are simple, lid lifts right off, do your thing and plop back on. And you can see. Omg how you can see. +5 for Petri dishes and Parafilm

Yes they come wrapped in plastic bags. Then the lids and cups are in a separate bag inside the first bag. I open them in my SAB.

Yes I agree you can see really well. My setup isn't no pour. I pour my agar into the cups, then snap the lid on after about 12-24 hours. No different than petris.

Did you wrap all of the poured plates individually? If so, I can see why it took so long. Wrap them in stacks and will take you all of 5 minutes to wrap 50+ plates

To be honest I haven't made the jump to petri dishes quite yet. I have like 30 pasty plates and recently bought a whole bunch of the Alien's Holy Grail plates. I eventually would like to start using petri's but my contam rate with the Holy Grail plates is about 3-5% so far and I can make quite a few at a time.
That being said, I do hate cleaning no pours and it is a process to make them up and PC them which does get old pretty quick.
