Help! No growth and weird slime on rye berries
    #26952436 - 09/24/20 09:47 AM (3 years, 4 months ago)

help! I used a liquid culture to rye berries and have waited a month and have seen no growth only a weird slime. Is this contamination or just slow growth? Just added a heating pad underneath as it may be a temp thing im guessing. Any help would be appreciated.

I don't have to see the jars to tell ya slime is a no go. Sounds like a bacteria pool. Start all over from spore and never use a heating pad for anything. Heat the area.

Thanks so much. I guess I'll trash these and start over. First time cultivating so I really appreciate the input!

No probs. Do you have agar?

If you inoculated your LC with a spore syringe that’s the problem 99%

If you don’t have growth in a week with LC you know something’s up. Just FYI to save time in the future. You should always stagger projects by a week or so in case something fails you’re still rolling

No agar just liquid culture. Just tossed the bags after research they smelled really sweet. Inoculated two more bags a couple of days ago and no sign of mycelium yet, but could just be a waiting game. Its been about 5 days on the new ones.

Agar is your best friend in this hobby. It allows you spot contamination in small containers before you go and inoculate bags and jars. You need to get familiar with spotting contams and how mycelium reacts to contams early in this line of work.

Not to mention if you had agar, you can also test liquid cutures on it first to be sure.

Good to know! Thanks for all the knowledge. If these don't work out I have one more syringe of LC I will try. Im think perhaps the bags themselves were contaminated as i have not seen any growth on the new bags only what looks to be condensation and just check temp in closet im keeping them in and its at 73. Thinking of trying and ordering new bags from midwest grow kits as they seem to be pretty reputable.

What I've seen many people say, to myself included when I started, is you are better off not buying premade kits. It's much more cost effective to do it yourself. Plenty of info and videos out there to help you do it. But if you HAVE to get a kit to start try find a vendor with a lot of positive feedback etc etc etc.

Good luck
