Seattle find 5/17/04--UPDATED 4/8/05
    #2693435 - 05/17/04 09:08 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

I was walking through the grass on campus, keeping my eye out for Stunzii but not really seeing anything in the grass my eyes wandered off to woodchips not too far away. That's when I spotted these growing out of the woodchips.
I'm not really sure what else they could be but Stunzii but they were growing in woodchips, which would be slightly unusual this time of year. They don't have any real pronounced annular ring, most have nothing at all. They stain very heavily, just like any cyanescen I've found and, discounting the bluing, the stems are pure white.
There are some gnarly looking guys in that group but fun none the less.

Peace - @cro

They look a lot like Stuntzii to me.. but they seem to be missing "the ring"...The intense blueing is almost a lock. I hope this is them... We've had some nice rain. Perhaps a woodchip hunt is in order.

Excellent finds.

Yeah, I have no doubt that they are an active Psilocybe, they just aren't fitting the stunzii description too well. I'm not really sure what else they would be though so if I was to place a bet I'd put my money on stunzii.
And it should be noted these were in an area which looks like it has been receiving regular watering from sprinklers.

Peace - @cro

hrmm, interesting...

you should take some in to the myco dept and let them take a look, I don't think they'd have a problem with doing that

Nice Find @cro, i see what you mean they look like blue ringers but at the same time they look kind of like cyancens. We will just have to wait and see what MJ has got to say!

P.S. that is very odd that they were in the woodchips instead of the grass, I always thought that the stuntzii started to grow in woodchips when the temps droped like in the mid fall. To bad my town had a high enough elevation to get enough snow to kill off the mycilium, i really need to go walk around the campus someday and see what i can find.

HI @cro,

I too found these same shrooms three years ago. Currently I have two people working on them with me for Id and a paper. Here is one foto of several I took yet cannot find the photos. This was on my computer.

And they too blued intensely.

Check you pM please,

john

Here is the image. I will look for theother pictures now.

Well only found this one othetr image. So not feel i like looking into more that 40,000 photographs to find a few.

mjshroomer

ME and a friend found only 9 shrooms, sent 3 to Guzman and three to Stijve in Switzerland. They both are just starting to look at them. Workman is attempting cultivation at this very moment, I hope.

so this is possibly an unidentified psilocybe? That would be pretty cool.

P.S. this is a little off topic but MJ i was just wondering if you have got any knew information on that unidentifyed Psilocybe in your book on page 17. I just have been interested in this ever since i first read it.

Hi Fliped,

That image is from a clearcut in Kingston, Washington from 1981 0r 1982. According to Guzman it is a variation of P. pelliculosa. Gets very fat stems and knobby bow-tie kinda caps and bluing in stem. Not very potent at about 3/4 of a fresh ounce or more.

rather weak. have not seen any since then.

mj

Very cool @cro. I just moved to Seattle from the North and have been wondering about spring mushrooms in the area. Sounds like its time to get out and take a walk  Nice find and thanks for the pics.

Hey @cro,

I want a bit more info on the habitat for these mystery shrooms. Were they found in alder chips? Were they in clusters like Cyans or spread out? Was there grass near the chips or just straight chips?

Thanks,
Stymee

If either of you would like to send me small fragments of your collections, I can "do the DNA" and answer your questions about identity / relationship. (I'm building up an extensive DNA library of the main wood-degrading Psilocybe complex).

Of course. They were found in the same environment I would look for cyanescens. Alder/hardwood chips, a well established bed with dirt starting to show through. The mushrooms were spread out among a 9 foot strip bordered by grass on one side and the bushes in the bed on the other. I wasn't able to look how deeply into the bed the mushrooms grew, just picked the obvious ones showing themselves. I don't like picking during the day, on campus. It seems everyone knows what you are doing, whenever I pick a spot on campus during the day, I notice when I come back to that spot it will have been raided. it's just safer to look during the day and pick in the evening.
They were spread out, more of a long narrow patch than the big cluster patches.
Another thing that struck me as strange is, they were growing within inches of the grass but none were growing in the grass, which I would normally find for the dry condtions we've had.
But anyways, if there is anything else you would like to know feel free to ask.

Peace - @cro

Some of the ones i found out there looked just like yours, but didn't bruise blue. White stems, tan gills.

Well I took a look back today just to see how the rain was treating them and there does seem to be a new flush coming up, so hopefully we can get to the bottom of this. It was right around dusk when i went so the light wasn't good enough for real pictures and this is all that came out that wasn't too fuzzy.

And on my way there I stumbled across these:

Hopefully, I can get some better pictures shortly but I've been really busy as of late.

Peace - @cro
