I'm sick of doing stupid pointless shit with my life. It's become circular and meaningless.
So I joined the fire brigade.
I start on Tuesday.

Full time?
I fully intend to join on a voluntary basis when I move there in a few years.

Part time paid - on call.
Will have to move up the ladder to get full time.
Money is pretty okay, very similar to what I get now.
I've saved people before and I'm not scared of blood. But I bet I have a million things to learn.

Good luck man. It's Honest and good work.
The other day I was literally thinking about volunteering to a local fire station to do something with my time.

I got my paperwork through today.
I'm scared and excited. I fit everything they want... fit, honest, dedicated, ethical, commited, experienced.
I need this. More than I've needed anything in a long time.

When it comes to such things - learning how to operate to save life in an emergency - I've found that it's most often 'common sense' - it just clicks into place when someone with authority tells you 'this is how to do it'.
Anyways man, I'm fucking well happy for you. Positively 'chuffed to bits', as they say in some circles.
I might well end up hitting you up for some deets/tips when I make it over there for good.

So Awesome!!!
I looked into becoming a firefighter here because we always have huge wild fires and I am willing and able to help. I know EMT stuff and did some fire training in school. I am also an electrical contractor which would help them out a lot in certain situations. The problem was that they wanted 3 years of school and then you only get like $75,000. I am already making more than that without more school.
They should have an 8 week course that prepares you to help out in certain ways and then teach you the rest on the job or whatever. That way they get more people on reserves to help when needed.

Well I just finished my first meeting. It's fully intense. The service I have joined is a fire and rescue emergency service. It's everything from house and bush fires to car accidents to swift water and remote location rescue. It's serious business with consistent serious training that never ends.
Maybe this is the thing I've been looking for. I've had 3 great careers, I've earned money, but I've never really felt like I made a real difference.
I need this. I just hope I have the balls the deal with the inevitable tradgedy I will have to bear witness to.

Do they have an upper age which you can start at?

I don't think so. They do have fitness and psychological requirements though, and being a resident, and having a clean criminal record, and passing drug tests... and ironically being clean shaven, whilst tattoos are just fine.

Apparently it's all about community image. Heroes don't have beards apparently. Beards go in breathing gear just fine and if you want to work a free bushfire fighting position you can keep your bushy mane. If you want to do the real front line work you gotta be clean shaven.
Drug tests just disqualify weed smokers really, which is kind of ironic. I hate these stupid things, I have them at my current work too. Not because I smoke weed and stuff, but because I don't see why weed smokers should get discriminated against whilst alcohol users are socially a-okay. Fucken hypocrisy

It's not even about safety or stuff, just appearance. There's a lot of money involved in rescue services, so guvmint employees have to look the part.
