Spawned a few tubs with no top layer. Can I add a layer right now?

Just mixed them and spawned. It's a been a couple days. Should I sneak a 1/4" on there right now? Or just keep it the way it is and add a casing layer?
I only just realized this mistake and I need help figuring out what to do.

Both options are perfectly fine. The second entails more work than the first assuming you mean a peat based casing because it needs to be pasteurized.
If what you have there is a PE variety, by all means add a peat casing later once 100% colonized.

Make sure you add the casing once it has 100% colonized and allowed a few days to consolidate. I added my casing too early (after full colonization but the mycelium still had some momentum) and the mycelium simply ate the whole casing, removing the point of the casing! Check my thread for more details:

In this case I'm not even going to case, just the top substrate level at spawning. Could I do it mid colonization (now)?
I also just read Frank saying screw the top layer. I will likely still try a thin top layer on my next tubs, maybe it's better to leave them undisturbed than to add the coir layer?

The top layer is just to prevent drying during early stages. The mycelium will eat through it anyway eventually and as long as surface conditions are good (nice beads of moisture) then you should have no worries.

So a super thin layer should suffice. I definitely am not too interested in adding too many days to full colonization

It seems like the mycelium fruits when it wants to fruit. That's what the mycelium showed me at least! :P . Add a top layer if you wish. There was a stage where whatever I threw at my tubs it ate, I joked I could put a human finger in there and it would eat that as well! I kept patching my casings and it kept eating them. Then one day, they just stopped and started fruiting.
