All In One grow bag spawn to Shoebox (now fruiting)
    #26951380 - 09/23/20 03:59 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Hey! So I have two all in one bags, with grains & substrate (coir). The bags are a bout 4lb each. They were inoculated about 3.5 weeks ago and the grain+coir have already been mixed once, so almost fully colonized.

I took one bag, mixed it up in the bag again, and dumped it into a shoebox bin with a liner & I want to make sure I'm still on the right track before I do the next bag. Did I shoebox it too early? The brick in the bag wasn't fully solid, but close.

The grains and coir take up about half of the bin. Is this too much or ideal?

I didn't use a casing layer as I don't have any extra coir (all my coco is mixed with perlite for another type of grow) but I do have some verm if it'll help. Will I be fine without it?

The sides of the liner fell below the grains+coir and I didn't want to dig my hands in all around to pull it back up so I might've defeated the purpose of using the liner.

I plan to fruit with a grocery bag in place of the lid, misting as needed.

With what I've read I feel like I'm fine but thought I'd ask.

I didn't do this with much sterility since the grains+coir were already, say 70-80% colonized. I used gloves, wiped the bin and liner with alcohol, and dumped the bag in. It did have to sit open while I had to find and wipe down the lid.

Im new here so someone more experienced should be able to give you a better answer. As long as the grains in the bags were 100% colonized then you should be good. Good luck!!!

Help me understand. This is one of those bags you buy with premixed substrate consisting of a sterilized mix of grain and coir that you have to inoculate with a syringe? Or you got the grain and the coir separately from the same vendor? How did you inoculate it?
How long have they been in the tub? (we call this spawning, btw).

This was a pre-sterlized bag with a mix of grain and substrate, inoculated with a MS syringe from my own print which has been successful for multiple BRF cakes.

Just opened one bag and put it in the tub today and wanted to post here before I went forward with the other. Thought I had everything figured out then the uncertainty hit after every little action I did

If you're gonna do something like that, which I think has a pretty low chance of success anyway, you really should let it fully colonize and fruit inside a grow bag.  You should definitely not have exposed it to open air before 100% colonization, that was not a good thing to do.

(if I understand correctly what you're working with here)

Understood. I still like the idea of spawning the other bag to another shoebox, but I'll at least wait for the other bag to fully colonize...when I first came on here talking about bags I was politely given all these other methods to fruit lol. Not necessarily opposed to fruiting the last one in the bag but wouldn't spawning it to the shoebox yield better results?

Another reason is I've got another colonized bag/brick in a monotub sitting on perlite/foil. I'm ready to do bulk in that monotub once these bags are finished, ideally the shoebox was to get experience with a smaller scale of bulk. Seeing firsthand what things should look like along the way is a big help as a newcommer. I'll see if the one I did spawn ends up ok...

Can anybody speak on the yield of mixing the next bag into a shoebox vs fruiting in the bag?

Here's the remaining bag, pretty close to 100%. Just wondering what I should be looking for before spawning it into the shoebox. And if anybody has any advice on the yield from spawning to the shoebox vs fruiting in the bag?

(ignore the red. rtv silicone spilled onto the bag after inoculation)

I've had excellent luck with all in one grow bags. This is my second grow and had over 4oz dried off 4 bags first flush. I just open them entirely and use a SGFC. I also transferred one to a coir monotub to start transitioning to those and it's coming along good. Just be patient.heres a couple pics of each.

Both of those look nice! I have one brick in a monotub now and it's just started pinning, nothing like that yet though. I gotta get one of those racks.

I don't have another tub I could use...but I do have some shoeboxes. Putting them in the same tub wouldn't really fit.

This thread has me thinking clearly: Apparently I've been overthinking regarding yield https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26924176#26924176

I've already got one in a shoebox, I guess I'll try the other one in the bag? Then I'll have all three methods going lol.

update on the shoebox, seems to be colonizing fine but hard to get a picture.

I'm a little concerned about the moisture on the sides though - ignore it? The discoloration is the water.

Looks like you all were spot on about spawning too early. The shoebox seems to be under stress, theres a lot of yellow metabolite water though the surface looks almost fully colonized. The water on the sides has me reeeally concerned now. Should I pour it out? Wait to pour it out when I see pins? Don't pour it out at all?
You should be able to see some yellow water on the surface too. No noticeable odor but I haven't popped the top to check.

It's been around 85-90 degrees during the day lately, could the extra heat be causing issues? This is my 3rd of these bags and all have had too much moisture so I have an idea where the root of the issue lies but want to salvage this as best as I can.

Don’t try to pour anything out. I tried and almost flipped my cake outta the tub open it fan it. Place a fan near it the opposite direction.  The latter statement is my opinions not fact though so someone else should confirm. Cause I can’t even get past sub transfer

Is fanning safe? Should I try to sop some of the water with a paper towel? I'm scared to even pop the lid ahah

Got pins/fruits now! and tons of hyphal knots, some side pins. Still some water pooled on one of the sides & the surface looks gnarly where the water pooled. After that last post I began sopping up the surface water with a paper towel. The water came up easily but the surface was still "stained."

I don't know if I should be worried about the water/yellow spots

I hadn't misted but that was my next question! Thanks lol, I won't mist.  Moisture does fall from the lid every time I mess with it, even if I don't open it. The spawn was pretty soaked from the beginning.

Tried to get a paper towel in between the sides but the myc is grown tight to the plastic. I used that as an advantage to pour the water out, the block budged but didn't tip over. There's still some yellow water on that particular side though. I didn't want to press my luck trying to get all of it.

Either way, I'm surprised it made it this far. It's only been in the dark/ambient room light so far so I just introduced it to light as well.

Keeping the lid on for now, just unlatched...SFF's shoebox tek fruits with the lid on/unlatched. Seems so much easier to deal with than a plastic bag and if the fruits get that big I'll replace the lid with a bag. Let me know if this is a stupid idea lol.

Its about to blow up with pins. If the sub is on the wet side remove the lid for a few hours. Evaporation is a key pinning trigger.

I'm dealing with an All in One bag now.  The vendor said not to open the bag until the first pins form. My problem is that it took 5 months to fully colonize the grain. The brick is finally totally covered and now I worry it's starving for air. Not sure what to do.

isn't the yellow shit good for fighting contams?  isn't that why it's there in the first place?  Why soak it up? ...unless you are just generally talking about removing the moisture altogether.
