PF Tek jars stalled at 5 weeks... But pinning?
    #26951327 - 09/23/20 03:35 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

I started my first ever attempt at growing 36 days ago, following PF Tek and inoculating 6- 1/2 pint BRF jars with PES Hawaiian. Mycelium growth was steady and healthy with no contams but stalled at 2 weeks. I kept them in a small Tupperware container in a cabinet above my fridge at 70-72 degrees. I noticed they had stalled on day 14. Then I added 2 heating pads nearby which increased heat to 74/75 degrees, and also removed the Tupperware lid to increase FAE. They resumed growth until once again slowing down by day 20. I flipped and elevated the jars. They resumed growth but slowly until yet another stall by day 31. Today is day 37 with very little to no further mycelium growth.

Looking at the appearance of the side of the jars only they appear to be 85%/95% colonized. However 3 jars have no growth on the bottom, while three jars' bottoms are about 1/3 colonized.

Despite stalling a week ago, I discovered this morning that 2 jars each have 1 pin each.

I believe if I had kept the temperature and had removed the lid from day 1 they would have grown much faster. However after reviewing my process I suspect the main culprit could be that I possibly packed the jars too tight.

At this point, is there anything I can do to stimulate growth to 100%?

Should I give them more time, or birth them immediately, removing the uncolonized substrate?

Should I attempt to dunk and roll them? I worry if I do they will fall apart.

If dunking and rolling is a bad idea, is there an alternative way to birth them?

Any and all advice is valued. I still have so much to learn through trial and error but badly want to salvage what has otherwise been a successful incubation.

Pictures below were taken at day 31, and the cakes look exactly the same today at say 37, only two jars each have 1 pin.

Just birth them and scrape off/scoop out all uncolonized parts. It may look ugly and weird but it will fruit just as fine

Birthing was what I was thinking I would do, but is dunking and rolling still viable if there's a chance they'll fall apart? Can I birth without a dunk and roll?

Just the uncolonized portion should fall off.
What I did was I washed them under the faucet and got all that off then soaked and rolled them . Soaking is need imo because they need so much water to actually fruit. If a few pins fall off no biggy. New ones will replace them.

These things infected me... and now I have to  grow them.

I've read about losing these first initial pins, I just worry the cake as a whole will disintegrate in the water soak.

The cakes shouldn't disintegrate when being soaked after birthing.

I'm with Mateah

birth them as usual

you'll get them to fruit probably, how much and how long is hard to say, they look a little touch and go, I agree with you

any cakes that disintegrate on dunk are fucked for sure IMHO, if the mycelia is healthy they will hold together and only uncolonised portions should wash or scrape off

good luck with it

It looks like there’s a lot of bacteria living in there and that’s probably the main reason they’ve taken so long to get this far. Colonizing jars don’t really need fae, that’s more a term for fruiting. Jars need GE which is FAE on a much smaller scale. Just as long as they aren’t suffocating they should be aiight.

I’d also birth them because it looks like all the rest of the substrate has been claimed by bac. If they seem structurally sound then I guess I’d dunk them, if flimsy at all I’d just set them in a FC as is and maybe sprinkle verm on them.

Then if you wanna grow again I’d get some agar plates ready while these are fruiting and go from there. Even if you just wanna do BRF cakes again I’d definitely have started some more already or ASAP.

The mycelial network in colonized parts will be hard as bricks, there's no way it will disintegrate and it won't affect the overall performance when it comes to fruiting
