But really...I have a lot of age-anxiety and my job only make it worse. However, like others have said, if you take care of your body by exercising and having a balanced diet, typically growing old and dying is relativity painless. Most of the horrible ways to die...liver failure, dementia, heart-failure, end-stage renal disease can be prevented by modifying lifestyle. We are all going to die, and just have to surrender to whatever way that ends up being. It could also happen suddenly and without warning and therefor you will avoid the terror of knowing you are dying. The only other option you have is suicide, which is not much better.

Reading philosophy and living without regret is the best antidote to death-anxiety.

if you fear getting old and losing your mind, there are a few tricks to counter the ravages of age on your mind - ones that will greatly reduce its grip, or if you're diligent enough, even reverse its hold.

first off:

GET ENOUGH SLEEP. EVERY NIGHT. 7- 10 HOURS DEPENDING ON YOUR INDIVIDUAL NEEDS. I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH.

yes, this statement deserved all that blingy. sleep is your body's superpower. every night, when you go to sleep, your body goes into "white mage" mode and starts casting Cure V spells on itself like it's going out of style on all it's systems. (ok so maybe it's not magic, but still.) meanwhile, the brain starts loosening up, flushing out nasty things that build up over the day that make you feel tired and making it difficult to make more memories, while it proceeds to store the days memories into long term storage.

if you don't give your body enough rest, it takes days just to make up for an hour or two of lost sleep. that sleeping binge on your days off ain't enough to make up for your 4-6 hour dozes during the work week. you're literally killing yourself, slowly, both physically and mentally. your skin starts to age prematurely, you get brain fog and fatigue, you heal slower, and you get sick easier, among other things. it's just bad, period, because you're not giving your body enough time to repair itself at night. you're better off skipping a meal than you are skipping sleep. (unless you're really really thin.)

second: routines. f' em. routines are bad, especially for your brain. embrace the chaos! try new things! maybe a new hobby, maybe try reading a new book or watching a new anime you heard about. maybe this new game kids are raving about these days, or finally learning how to use this tiktok thing. keep up with the times, learn how to sew basic stitches, or try to do basic cooking.

you basically want to cultivate a growth mindset - don't think "you can't teach an old dog new tricks". instead, imagine yourself as being like a tree - trees can live for several thousand years, and keep growing as long as nothing kills them. they just keep growing and living. likewise, you want to keep growing and adapting, learning new things and keeping up with the times. by doing this, your will discover your brain really is like a muscle - it grows stronger with use, and like all muscles, it needs to be shaken up or else things get too easy for it and it goes on autopilot, withering away.

third: meditation of any sort is a big help to clear the mind and relieve stress. it can be formal meditation, or it can be something as simple as some form of art - after all, art is simply an act of communication. the artist is communicating "something" to the audience, whether it be their dreams, some sort of message, an emotion, or something else. the audience doesn't have to be someone else after all - the audience can be the artist themselves, such as in art therapy. participating in the act of creating something can often be a powerful tool for getting in the right mindset for clearing the mind and helping to make sense of difficult issues in ones life.

fourth: the dreaded E word. thats right, exercise. scientifically proven, any kind of regular exercise improves your brain function. sorry couch potatoes. if it makes you feel better, i'm pretending this advice doesn't exist too. <_<;

fifth: humor. keeping a positive outlook in life is kind of tied to the whole don't stress out thing, but it's also important for overall brain health. that's not to say you shouldn't be gullible, but there's no point freaking out and getting mad over things you can't change, right? i've also found that having a positive attitude and sense of humor has led to me having very few issues with other people, and when problems arise in life, that same attitude has allowed me to see a way to surmount said problems calmly and gracefully instead of panicking and having them pile up like a trainwreck. usually it's finance related issues, since i only make like $1000 a month, lol, so there's always a "thing" that decides to shit the bed every month i have to deal with. XD

sixth: nutrition. eat healthy. avoid cigs and alcohol if you can, as they're pretty bad for your brain health and health in general (cancers, fatty liver disease, depression, expensive habits, and well... lots of stuff. both combined kill around 500k americans a year.) as well as any illegal drugs that are bad for your health as well... psychedelics don't count for the vast majority of people of course, but obviously there's plenty of illegal drugs that do qualify as not so healthy. <_<; energy drinks are generally best to stay away from as well - believe it or not, if you get proper sleep every night, decent nutrition, and e...ex... ok, proper sleep at least, you likely wont even feel the need for them. give the proper sleep thing and decent nutrition thing a 2 week run without a missed day and you probably will feel a person reborn!


i've followed these six pointers closely, other than the exer(cough) and nutrition (due to budget reasons mainly, but i try), and while i'm 35 years old, i've not felt any slowdown in my mental capabilities. in fact, i've only gotten more talented as i've gotten older. i used to be an absolute klutz as a kid, yet now i tend to catch things on reflex without thinking. i find myself with a broken piece of equipment and fixing it without a manual despite never seeing it before, or answering a question using knowledge i learned in a math class i had 10 years ago. i've actually had memories show up from over 27 years ago that i had thought lost - it's like my mind is a warehouse full of memories stored away in boxes, and they're just a packed away a bit messily, not actually lost. the warehouse just needs a bit of organizing.

lol, didn't mean to write so much. i still think it's hilarious that english classes and it's 5-10 page essays were some of my most hated times in school, yet i all too often accidentally do the equivalent of such without thinking on a forum and go "goddamnit psi no one's going to read this."

honestly, if you think those are all too much to try tackling at once, tackle the first on the list - sleep. there really is no substitute for getting enough sleep every night and giving your body and mind enough time to repair itself every night, and no worse way to damage yourself by not doing so.

(also, recent studies suggest that lack of adequate sleep is linked to things like Alzheimer's and dementia, as well as a host of other mental issues. sleep tight. :cujo:)

About 8 years ago I worked in a nursing home. Just as a dietary aide for about a year, but definitely get to know the people there. Had people as young as in their 50's and people well into their 100's. Wife is a nurse as well and most of her career she worked in nursing homes / geriatrics. Doing different stuff nowadays, but that's beside the point.

You shouldn't fear growing old. People pushing 106 still happy and vibrant while some in their 50's and 60's are having a rough time. You should fear instead growing unhealthy. There is a stark contrast between the two.

Some health problems are simply unavoidable, but the largest common denominators in quality of life into old age are activity level and social ties. Instead of fearing old age, which is inevitable, people should take conscious action to be more physically active and develop relationship skills with friends, lovers and family.

The body will generally break down faster when you stop moving completely. Boomers in their 5th year of retirement visibly deteriorating fast and completely bed bound while WW2 vets pushing 90 are getting themselves out of bed daily and getting strong coffee, bacon and ice cream for breakfast was a big eye opener for me and made me reflect on my own activity levels as an adult. Mentally people who are active into old age are often more with it too.

Can't discount things like alzheimer's, parkinson's, glaucoma, cancer, etc., but these aren't nearly as prevalent as body deterioration, heart problems, depression, lung issues and a dozen other preventable ailments.

Embrace that you'll grow old like every single human before you. But do something about it and it'll likely be a gentler ride which you'll be able to reason and negotiate with along the decline.

your post just reminded me, PatrickKn - there was another "trick" for helping with old age, or as you put it, growing unhealthy.

that trick, is "visualization". or i guess you could say, "mindset". there was a study done with some old people, where they had them literally pretend they were 20 years younger. they even had them put in a house that was designed to look like it was from their old days, with shows from that time period, and such. interestingly enough, those people, over the course of weeks, actually started to become healthier and more active, were able to get up out of bed unassisted, gained better muscle tone, and essentially turned back the clock a bit.

the point is, if you keep imagining yourself as an old codger, thinking of yourself as getting feeble and dimwitted, slowly getting dumber over the years and getting weaker... your bodies going to pick up on that. on the other hand, if you do the reverse, using visualization to imagine yourself as growing stronger and wiser over time, it can pick up on that as well, helping to counter some of the effects of old age.

i'm not saying that imagining yourself as immortal will make you immortal... unless you're REALLY good at visualization. ;3 but visualizing your worst fears is a very good way to start self-sabotaging yourself before your time. just as pro athletes visualize success before they even take their first action, you want to visualize yourself in good health even as you take action to improve it.

Getting old is easy, it happens all on its own, no effort required.  As far as staying metally sharp, hobbies, learning new things etc.  Think of the brain as a muscle, if you don't use it it atrophies, but if you use it it gets buff.  Works for getting old to.

I'm not afraid of growing old if I can fix my obesity problem. Growing old while very obese is bleak, it needs to come down.

I lost 15 pounds in my last job after two weeks, all I did was sweat and move my arms around, it was the easiest job.

i'm not sure if your insurance covers it, but i'm seeing a nutrition specialist because my medicaid does. (because being poor as dirt apparently does have advantages sometimes!)

of course, i'm kinda too poor to afford proper nutrition really, but from seeing her, she did look over my calorie intake and do some tests and found out i had metabolic syndrome (was burning 1650 calories a day when i shouldve been doing 2350 a day based on my age/sex/height/exercise level) and had unusually high sugar levels (73.something when fasting 24 hours instead of below 25).

based on that, the fact i was already eating fairly low calorie meals of around 1500-2000 calories a day and not seeing any real change (no surprise due to my low metabolism), and the fact i had frequent migraines, she prescribed topiramate and metformin extended release to try and help jump start the weight loss back in February. i've gone from 265 lb to 232-235 lb now. right now i'm kinda stuck in a rut, though i seem to be losing a bit of fat still... i think i'm actually gaining some muscle. o.O i actually can see... thigh muscles. and biceps. just little bumps peeking out but still!

obviously, this may not be your own issue losing weight - maybe you just have too much of a close relationship to your chips and sodas. ;3 (topiramate changes the taste of carbonated drinks to make them awful, so i can't drink those now. lol) or maybe you just need exercise, or are lacking in a nutrient or have a health issue that needs addressing. if you can though, it might be worth seeing an expert for guidance (and possibly a lil medicinal boost) to help you with the weight loss journey.

because being a healthy weight is definitely a big anti-age factor! i've not felt this good in like... ever!
