Gymnopilus ID request
    #26949654 - 09/22/20 03:57 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

Hey guys, back at my spot again to check on a patch of mushrooms, I look over and I see some giants growing.

I think they are all gymnopilus luteus and maybe junonius.

What do you think?

All of them are growing on rotting/dead wood, I will take spore prints as soon as I get home

If I'm not mistaken, omphalotus illudens has gills that go down the stipe, similar in look to the shape of a chanterelle.

I didn't see any that looked like that, but maybe I missed it.

Not Gymnopilus....what gives it away are the gills and the stipe....gills should be rusty brown/orange and the stipe should widen/have a bulbous shape towards the end..like the ones in my signature below

Definitely Gymnopilus - not G. junonius because that one doesn't occur in North America.  I don't think it's luteus because of the long stem that isn't wider at the base.

Odor is important in this group.

Run it through the key at the end of this paper:
