Best agar for strong growth? Weak agar transfers

Ok so I have problems getting good rhizomorphic growth on my agar dishes. I have done multiple transfers from multi spore syringe and clones. All are clean and yet all show the same kinda growth. Light, whispy, see threw looking growth.
Maybe tomentose or however you spell it
I have read that it could be The high nutes in the recipe I use which is.
5grams agar 5grams organic malt extract 250ml water
In the past the grocery store tek worked great but I like using a digital scale for more accuracy. Can I use the same recipe and instead of malt extract just use Potato dextrose In the same weights and ratios?
What’s a good PDA TEK

Awesome! I like the ease of it all. The grocery store tek got messy chopping up everything finally said time to dip the toes in some other mixes.
Any ideas on why the mycelium is so.... weak? Idk What to call it or if it’s fighting contamination or if it’s the tomentose thing? Lmao at the beginning I was thinking shit man this gonna be easy, slice n dice and here we go.. hahah nope. In the past it used to be picture perfect and I have only changed the recipe. Sterile technique has gotta better in my opinion. Out of 30 mason jars only had one that contaminated and I literally had to knock off the clone transfer with my fingers cause it was stuck an I said fuck this!!! Haha any advice on getting that tissue off the knife lmao gets me everytime seems like

I wish I could get a decent one but I haven’t been able to. The mason jars throwing off the focus and the bottom half of agar is slightly cloudy maybe from settling idk because i mixed it with boiling water for 10 minutes then poured up then pc.

You can try to experiment with higher/lower nutrient ratios or different recipes for example.
Clone 1 on 1%MEA and 2%MEA

clone 2

Multi strain culture

As you can see the difference in appearance with some cultures will be dramatic and with other cultures not so much.

Wow that’s awesome!! I would say mine look like clone # 2 1% right where that area gets light before hitting the main part. Mine get to that point but no thicker and hearty growth
What’s the weight mix for your recipe if you don’t mind me asking I’m thinking since I do 5gs agar 5gs mea and 250ml water that I’ll need 5gs agar and 2.5gs mea would be 50% right? Or am I way lost.
It’s been a long stressful day sorry for dumb questions

You used 5g of malt in 250g water, which makes it ~2% malt in that recipe. You've likely also used 5g of agar as well and that's sometimes referred to as the 'standard' recipe or standard 'strength' 2% Nutrients and 2%Agar in 96% water.

Ahhh ok yeah I’m doing the standard recipe. I apologize but I cannot for the life of me calculate right now. For one percent I would need 5gs agar 2.5gs malt, and 250 ml right? Lmao I can’t think to save my life right now. Sorry

Yes. A mL of water is 1 gram. 250 grams is your base amount. 2.5 g is 1%. You have it right. The 5 g agar is there to gel the 250 mL. It's not nutrition. The added sugars/starches etc are.

It'd be 5/180 = 2.77% because the dry weight counts towards total percent (but it's negligible)

No way to know unless they state the mixture of malt extract to agar in your pre-mix.
So your nutrition content is probably somwhere between .5 and 1.5% depending on how hard your agar is.
Edit: Anecdotal, but the pre-mix MEA I used was SOFT compared to the 2% agar 2% nute 96% water I've made myself (probably to cut costs, agar is the most expensive ingredient) so you're most likely closer to 1.5% malt extract 1.2% agar. Or safe to assume a 50/50 split which is most common.

Probably a few xfrs away from being a pin snatched from a plate that was probably 2-3 xfers away from germination. Grew wispy and irregular at first but somehow always ended in near perfect circles when it grew tomentose, as rizo it grew extremely distinct sectoring.
