PVC diameter to replace buckets

I am tired of using 5 gallon buckets, since I am trying to grow a lot more these days. I figured that I could just poke holes in a 6 inch diameter 5 foot long PVC pipe. But I found even bigger diameters. It seems to me like the diameter is about 6 inches when people use those big plastic bags, right?
Is this a method that people use? Do oysters do will in 6 inch diameter tubes of about 5 feet in height? Or should the diameter be bigger/ smaller?

IME oysters do well in whatever the hell you wanna put 'em in. If it's convenient for you to work with those (cleaning and all) then I wouldn't hesitate. Seems like those might be large, heavy, and awkward but that's just me. I don't think the oysters will care.

to clean those tubes seems to me you would need to use a pressure washer. And I think it would be a huge PITA to get the stuff out of the tubes unless you have some heavy machinery press. The plastic tubes I think the recommended diameter is 10" according to RR's tests on maximum efficiency.. if my memory serves me. But that is using the tubes that are the thin plastic throw away material and not pvc.

Well I have to clean the buckets, already. I figure pvc pipe will be easier with a hose.
My primary motivation is to grow a lot without single use plastic.

Seagu, can you link to this? I am not sure what you are referring to?

Its on one or more of RR's past posts.. Its been forever since I researched it all. But it is one of the things I researched because I had thought about all this type of stuff before too..

It is Going to cost you a lot of money to grow mushrooms in those tubes. You have to consider the labor getting them ready to fruit and the labor cleaning them so you can fruit in them again. This is the one thing I see people underrating when growing mushrooms. I am not going to spend many hours to save $10. Buy bags and make your life easier. I will say this one last time for all you great people out there. Time is the most valuable thing you have don't waste your time cleaning buckets or tubes to save a few cents.

Just curious why you're getting out of buckets? You can line those with a trash bag and not have to clean them at all. Can't get easier IMO.

Buckets are only easy when you are not supplementing. If you are supplementing the cheapest and easiest way is in bags.

Whether buckets or 5' pvc pipes I was assuming our OP was not supplementing

Cost is one thing, but aren't those bags super bad for the environment?
I was going to line the inside of the tubes with a biodegradable tarp that I could empty and use a few times before composting it.
I have been supplementing with wood chips, btw.

Plastic bags are, of course, bad for the environment. If you can afford compostable materials instead that would be great for the environment, although I can imagine a fair amount more expensive and labor intensive. Although maybe you could come up with something else that would be a compromise, like wax paper for example?
Wood chips aren't considered supplementation for our discussion purposes here as they don't require sterilization and are generally pasteurized just like any unsupplemented substrate. When we talk supplementation we are generally referring to bran or something else very nutritious.

Ya I have a tarp for now, but wax paper might be a great compromise. Either way, cleaning two 5-foot long pvc pipes will be easier than scrubbing 10 5-gallon buckets.
Indeed, my motivation is mostly for environmental considerations.
If anyone has a link to information about 10 inch vs 6 inch pvc pipe for this purpose, it would be greatly appreciated. Unfortunately, I cannot find 10 inch on sale for less than 20 ft at a time, so it is considerably more expensive.
I will definitely come back with some results as soon as I try either one.
