Should I Birth These Cakes??
    #26947881 - 09/21/20 02:17 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

I currently have 9 PF jars incubating. Before I am berated about straying from the TEK, I am aware that I used the wrong jars; using the correct ones may have averted the dilemma I am in. Nonetheless, all of my jars seem to be really close to being fully colonized. Though, I am not confident as to what full colonization truly looks like. In addition, 3 jars have started "pinning" and there is a tiny, immature basidiocarp growing in one of them. I quoted pinning because they are not pins. They are tiny, immature looking mushrooms. I was expecting primordia. Regardless, here are my images and questions.

Image 1: This is how far along each jar is. They are colonizing at the same pace and seem to be ~100% colonized. You can still see small amounts of substrate but it all has hyphae growing through it.

Image 2: This is what the bottoms of all the jars look like, seem to be fully colonized. Just wanted to show that even though they aren't wide-mouth, the bottoms colonized no problem.

Image 3: This is the jar with the biggest "pin" of the 3 with pins. The pin is at the top of the jar.

Questions:
1) Are these jars fully colonized?

2) If they are not fully colonized, Should I still birth the ones with the fruits?

3) Should I expose these jars to light for a couple days before dunking/rolling in order to stimulate formation of primordia?

Thank you in advance for any advice/recommendations/not roasting me dry for straying from the tek! Much love guys.

Yes, They look fine. You can wait a few days after full colonization. Those pins will grow up to be big. I have been keeping jars in ambient light as well as dark honestly it does not seem to matter much. You better believe you birth the ones with pins that is a good thing not a bad thing. A couple of my jars are doing that before full colonization because I did not jam enough juice deep enough in the jar.

This was a preformed pin at one time.

Your jars finished colonizing at least a week ago if some of them are fruiting already. Dunk those cakes for 24h as soon as possible and place them in a fruiting chamber. Gl

Thanks for the advice guys. Should I use H2O2 when dunking? If so, in what concentration?
