Atlantic Canada Liberty Cap Season 2020 (NL/NS/NB/PEI)

Hi folks! It's been a long, dry summer (in NL at least!) but with the rain we've had over the past week, I think the liberty caps are starting to poke their way out of the ground.
I found just two today in St. John's, NL. Didn't look too hard because there were a bit too many people out and about, but where there's one, there's usually more not too far behind.

Looking forward to seeing what you folks find this year!

Hi clock very nice finds!! Did you found more?? Curious about the habitat and temps about that canadian mushroom!? I think they love tall grass and cows? Supposed to be present in Québec but seems very rare. Thank you brother

Cool, I'll have to get out soon and have a look too. I think NS season is at least a couple weeks behind you guys every year, though. I always try to go when it is raining out so there's no one around.

Hi Clockwork, There is very little happening here in NS, liberty cap wise, due to the severe drought this summer (at least in the Annapolis Valley). I lived on the Avalon for two mushroom seasons (I mark the passage of time by "mushroom season"). It was the best picking I have ever had in my life. I couldn't believe it. I have found liberty caps in some very productive fields in the Pacific Northwest, in Cape Breton, and in other parts of Nova Scotia and NOTHING compares to the abundance that I saw on the Avalon Peninsula. It's like Newfoundland's best kept secret (or was, ahem). I know one guy who refers to "The Liberty Fields of Avalon"...very poetic, and Arthurian. Having said all that, a friend of mine who lives in Conception Bay North informed me, this morning, that there are few mushrooms to be had at all in that part of the Avalon, due to limited rainfall.
Despite the lack of mushrooms in general here in NS, Rolly (another Shroomery member) and I have been finding lots of Psilocybe caerulipes over the past couple weeks (see the post that Quebecybin started on the P. caerulipes for our report). I know that Andrus Voitk and others have documented that species from Newfoundland, it might be an idea to look for those as well...
Happy hunting!

Yay Maritimers!
Well... I Failed To Get Undershots of The "Lone Lib" I Found Earlier This Year N' Even Though I Checked His "Unders" N' There Was a Definite Purple Spore Staining... He Looked Super "Conocybe-ish" In My Shitty Pic And I Failed To Relocate Him, So In The Interest of Not Misleading Anyone I Pulled The Thread... I'm Honestly Glad I Did Though Because I'm More Excited To See a Few "Locals" I Don't Know Yet Here!
It's Been Close To 2 Weeks Since I Got Out Unfortunately... Got in A Car Accident THe Night of "The Storm"... Had Surgery & Then Woke Up in Recovery Hand-Cuffed (I Was a Passenger & It Ended Up I Couldn't Be Charged With Shit) But I'm Still Pretty Fucked Up....
Anyway Though, I Normally Go Out Daily But Just On The Way Home Today... I Spied These Two Lil' Soldiers... Once Again I Left Them There (I Usually Always Leave The Early Risers Each Season Thinking... "Well They Fruited Early and Are of Good Stock So I'll let Em Mature & Drop as Many Spores as Possible!"...It's Likely Pointless But It's My Ritual At This Point) Anyway I Tried To Get a Gill Shot Since I Wasn't Picking Em... But The Camera Sux Ass N Its Another Blurry Mess... But These Aren't Atypical Anyway & Should Be Easily ID-able For Others Anyway!....
I Can't Wait To See Everyone's Posts Here This Season... Hopefully This Dry Warm BS Lets Up & We ALL Get a "REAL Season" Out of 2020... Also I Have Friends Who Pick "The Avalon" N' They Always Make Me Jealous AF I've Picked Most of NS At One Time or Another... Spent a Lot of Time Picking CB & When Younger Too... I've Also Picked Various Areas in NB & Only a Couple Spots One Year in NFLD.... But I Gotta Say... The MOST Libs I've EVER Encountered Were in PEI... We Went There In Our Mid Teens & Were Filling Grocery Bags in Practically No Time At These 2 Fields.... NOWHERE Has EVER Come Close to Topping There for Me!.... The Last Few Years Yields Have Been WAY Down & I've Lost a Lot of My "Main Habitats" To Construction or Invasive Weeds Taking Over... But I'm Staying Optimistic That We're Due For a Real Bloody Season Again!
Anyway, Good Luck Hunting Folks!
(Pics Added Finally!)

Re: Quebecybin
Hi! From my understanding they like more or less consistent daytime temps less than 15°C, and tend to pop up after the rain. I haven't found them in tall grass before (although my experience doesn't speak for everyone!), but tend to grow on grass that's either mowed or grazed on by cattle or sheep. My best spot is around 150m above sea level and was probably used for livestock within the last 50 years or so.
We had a bit of a heatwave over the past week so I haven't been back. Temps have come back down so perhaps I'll check it out again next weekend!
Ps: I'm sister, not brother

Well, I have never gone mushrooming in PEI, but I can see it...all those fancy golf courses and whatnot. Dress up like a Bachelor of Commerce graduate, don a snappy visor, carry a golf club in one hand and a single malt in the other...the perfect disguise for lib hunting in PEI. Nice pics Clockwork and Liberty King...running into P. semilanceata every autumn is like meeting up with an old friend.

Yep Definitely Agree With This!... N' It So Happens I Ran Into A Bunch of Ol' Friends Today! Also Your "PEI Disguise" Sounds Bang On!...Photography or Dog Walkin' Have Been My Cover Many Times... But Strollin' Around Wit a Drink Sounds Better Right Now For Sure!

What "The Sister" Said All Looks Accurate To Me! ... I'm a Fuckin' Nerd N Kept Weather Logs Over The Last Decade, On N' Off, Of When My Libs Flushed The Most... Seems Like a Few Days of 10°C or So Really Gets Em Poppin"...Also I've Picked Very Tall Grass Quite a Few Times... N Ya Get Some Bigginz, But It's Hard Goin N' Def The Above Mentioned Are Much Better Habitats Anyway!... I'm Not So Lucky To Pick Grazed Areas... I Hit Ball Fields, Grave Yards, Parks N Just Random Peoples Lawns Mostly! We Had Rain Last Night N' Cool Temps... But Today The Sun Was Out Again... Which Was Perfect Because Instead of The "Brown Buggers" Ya Really Gotta Work For They Had Nice White Caps!... I Plucked About 80-100 Caps... Left a Bunch of "Babies" Too!... I Thought I'd Be "Smart" N' Take an Actual Camera Today... Snapped a Shit Ton of Pics... N Now No Matter What I Do The Fuckin' Thing Will Not Be Recognized By The PC... It's Driving Me Nuts So I'm Stepping Away From The Damn Thing For a Bit! Anyway... Of Course There's No Card Reader in This P.O.S. Either... But I'm Gonna Try N' Borrow One Or Figure This Crap Out Eventually... I'll Post The Pics Then!...
Happy Hunting To The Rest of You in The Meantime, I'm Already Planning to Hit a Few Other Spots Tomorrow... I've Got One a Ways Out That Always Produces That I'm Really Hopin' To Get To!

First post! I'm over in PEI from NS for a few days. I heard mushrooms are quite abundant here. Hoping the forecast is right for rain tomorrow. Any tips for where I should look? I'm pretty much in the middle of PEI so I should be able to get anywhere without too much of an issue. Also, assuming rain, should I go during the day tomorrow? Or early morning Monday after the rain stops? Thanks!

Woof, went out to my go-to spot this morning and didn't find a single one. We've had cool weather and some rain so I'm honestly a bit shocked. Hope y'all are having better luck than I am!

Over the west coast of the island here. Have checked a couple spots the last few weekends and not a thing to be found. Was wondering how others have been doing on their hunt so far. Lots of rain this week and cold temps but nothing. Disheartening.

Good luck on your hunt, Capital D, hope you find something. If not, you could console yourself with some of that tasty Gahan House ale!
Clockwork and Wavey - it's been really dry this season here in the Annapolis Valley of NS. Very few mushrooms are fruiting at all. Having said that, I went inland toward the south shore the other day and there was more happening (Marasmius sp., Pleurocybella porrigens, Russula sp., Armillaria mellea, etc) but no libs.
I grow Stropharia rugoso-annulata. This year there were a number of times that fruitbodies in my (exposed) patch dried right out due to the wind. So, maybe this is the season to look for moist, sheltered microclimates?

I was out and about being a tourist all day, stopped at like 20 places along the highways, went through Strathgartney - lots of fungi, but no libs. I'm not very experienced though, and I didn't jump any fences to check cow fields... Maybe tomorrow will be better if it stays damp all night. By the way, anyone know any spots in Cape Breton I could look if the weather's right? I don't live on the mainland. Thanks!

Wowza! I'll be back in CB Wednesday - supposed to be a rainy day so I'll have to strap on my boots and go looking. I happen to live right by a big field, but it's hella overgrown. I can think of a few spots to check though.

Hi everyone, I went out looking for libs last week in the Annapolis Valley and found one sorry-looking, shrivelled-up specimen. We finally got sufficient rainfall for mushrooms here in this part of Nova Scotia, but the nighttime temperatures have started dropping below 0C. There may still be a couple weeks left of this season...but it hasn't been great.

Started my hunt in my own backyard here in PEI. Working on IDing my finds with my trusty mushroom ID book, google and PlantSnap. I have the added benefit of owning a microscope this year so I’m looking forward to checking out spore prints more closely! Have to go get tested for the Rona right now but thought I would share the pics of what I found today

Hi Maritimer, nice pics. We have found lots of the Coprinopsis micaceus here in Nova Scotia (your first pic). It's hard to tell what your second and third pics are, my guess is Armillaria sp. for the second and possibly either Laccaria or a member of the hygrophoraceae for your third pic...but it's hard to tell from pics. Happy mushrooming! R_D

Wow. I don’t know where my head has been at the past couple months. Maybe it’s been the warm weather this fall or something I don’t know - but I’m just now realizing that I was mega late starting my hunt this year. And now I might have missed the lib boat completely with (seems to me anyway...) abrupt shift in the weather. I’ll just keep looking that’s all you can do - right? 🤷♀️

I hear you Maritimer - it has been a very dry season here in the Annapolis Valley. I don't know about PEI, but we have had some good rains and now we're in a warm spell. Hopefully we'll see some interesting things pop up over the next several days...
